Flatliners… Waverley Goes to the Movies

Ok, we didn’t go to the movies, but Waverley’s weekend results certainly resembled that of a dramatic movie. You know the drill, the lead actor is being rushed into hospital with a mortal wound. Still alive, they are whacked on the EKG machine, to see a couple of beeps, only to flatline shortly afterwards.

The beeps of life for Waverley were the opening games, with Colts and 4th Grade both recording wins against Briars, only to be followed by looses in 5th Grade, Women, 3rd Grade, 2nd Grade & 1st Grade. Flatline…

The results from the weekend were as follows:

Grade Result Position
The Palace
1st Grade
Lost 12- 41 9th
The Palace
2nd Grade
Lost 21 – 24 5th
3rd Grade Lost 10 – 30 10th
Alexander Associates
4th Grade
Won 45 – 0 1st
Cardsmart Consulting
Colts
Won 17 – 5 8th
JCB Communications &
Aquilla Plumbing
Flying Fifths
Lost 17 – 8 5th
NSW Farmers
Women
Lost 6th

The results were largely to form, but were particularly disappointing for JCB Plumbing & Aquilla Plumbing Flying Fifths and The Palace 2nd Grade, as both matches were critical to their Premiership hopes. The results leave Flying Fifths with a difficult task of catching Colleagues, especially if the two sides don’t meet again. Waverley sits 14 points off 1st place in 5th place in the Halligan Cup (remember the Halligan structure is 1st past the post). Similarly 2nd Grade are now 7 points (and one game ahead) out side of the top four, and have some work to do in coming weeks.

You can discuss the weekends results on the forum. Click here.

Overall it was a frustrating day for the club, and not just because of the results. With 1mm of rain since Wednesday, Council decided that that was far too much rain and closed the main oval. On inspection the ground was perfect, especially when combined with the sunny skies and windy conditions drying what little moisture was on the pitch.

The weekend marks two weeks on the road for the rest of the club, starting with a short hop to UNSW for the men (including the Flying Fifths) and at home for the women. The men back up the weekend with a longer road trip to St Ives, which are then followed by two weeks at home (Hunters Hill and Kings (including Ladies Day)) and then a weekend off.

Not so good a weekend…

All round it was a shocker on the weekend. Not just because we lost every grade bar 4th Grade, but because of the lack of general support on the weekend.

This was highlighted in two ways. 1) Lack of bods making their way to Turramurra in a crucial round against BOBs, especially when there was some good chances for some upset victories and 2) those that did turn up didn’t stick around to support / back up etc, generally stuffing up our chances of wins across the grades.

All in all it wasn’t too good, and can’t be repeated, otherwise it’s down we go in 2011. Read More→

Giddy Up! 4 out of 5!

Waverley Rugby Club has enjoyed its best outing of 2010 winning an impressive four out of five games against Newport, on a perfect winters day in Sydney.

After weeks of crappy weather rained off Waverley’s Round 7 – May 22nd clash, Waverley made the most of its June Long Weekend encounter against fellow seaside club Newport, with The Palace 2nd Grade the only team to go down.

And what a great day it was. Perfect sunny skies, but with cool temps, made it the perfect way to make up for a missing out on a weekend of rugby, and even better was the impressive display by all teams to take it up to our higher ranked opponents.

The successful round marginally increases our margin over last placed Hornsby, but only marginally because Hornsby also had a successful weekend too, with an upset win over finals contenders Kings Old Boys in the Barraclough Cup. Maybe this is a good sign for Waverley, that it can build on it’s two wins on the trot in 1st Grade, to challenge those teams higher up the ladder.

Props Wanted

Read today’s other news article, Want to be a Waverley Prop Star. Waves is in desperate need of some front row blood, so if you’re aware of any potentials, or want to have a go yourself, let us know.

Match Reviews

Reading through the preview from last week (brr it’s cold…), the predictions were largely (and thankfully) correct.

For Waverley, the round represents the half way point of the Home and Away, and is a good chance to see where we are sitting and what finals hopes we may have. Unfortunately four other clubs are still one round behind and with Hunters Hill two rounds behind, thus making real comparisons difficult.

But we’ll try!

Cardsmart Consulting Colts

Waverley walked out of the day with a thrilling 12 to 11 point win over (then) 3rd placed Newport. As the only team to have beaten 1st place Barkers Old Boys, this is a great result for Waverley, and vindicates a lot of effort put into the squad in recent weeks.

Unfortunately, the margin should have been higher, with Waverley about to secure another try when the ref decided that advantage had been played, so called Waverley back to a penalty.

I know, Waves may have fouled in the interim period, but don’t let the facts get in the way of a good story.

Unfortunately I can’t tell you who the try scorers were, as the team sheet shows Michael Hatten, Steve Fairburn and Matt Hamilton all scoring tries, despite Waverley only securing 12 points.

The result leaves Waverley in 9th place (as opposed to the 14 we should have been on had we not forfeited against Oatley), making the task of qualifying for the finals very difficult.

With Waverley ~14 points off the top four (but one game ahead), it is still theoretically possible for Waverley to make it through to the finals, but it will be a massive ask, with Waverley needing to win virtually every game here in.

Alexander Associates 4th Grade

In a top of the table clash Waverley continued it’s unbeaten run, and firmly entrenches itself in top position.

The next four weeks sees Waverley play the balance of the top six teams. If past performance is an indicator Waverley is unlikely to be knocked off it’s perch.

Waverley remains odds on favourites for back to back Premierships

Final score 26-0, with tries to Tainui Wynyard, Anthony Collett and Rob Pryor.

3rd Grade

Storming into its 2nd win of the season in the Blunt Cup, Waverley sits on equal points with Hunters Hill and St Ives (two and one games down respectively), with a great chance to move itself out of 10th place in coming weeks.

Like Colts before them, Waverley scraped through with a narrow one point (20 – 19) win over Newport, with tries to Steve Hearn (2), Mark Lee, and Bobby Hopper (WTF, three out of the four tries came from props, no doubt sea gulling).

It was an important win for 3rd Grade, because despite sitting in last place, they have a very realistic chance of making the finals, being just 13 points (and same number of games) as 3rd placed Barkers Old Boys.

With nine rounds to go, Waverley needs to continue its recent good form, and it will be in a shot of making the finals. The next few weeks will be critical for Waverley’s success.

The Palace 2nd Grade

Last week we tipped this as the match of the round, with two top billing sides battling for a position in the top four. Unfortunately for Waverley, they went down 20 points to 12, plus missed out on an all important bonus point.

In the end, this dropped Waverley out of 2nd place, down to 6th place, which just shows you how competitive the Stockdale Cup is again this season, with just seven points separating the top 7 teams.

While Waverley remains in a strong position to secure a finals berth, the next few weeks sees Waverley take on the top four sides. Waverley needs to use these matches to build for a possible premiership, plus to keep traction in the Divisional Championship (2nd Grade are still carrying the rest of the club in this regards).

Both tries to rampaging No. 8, Hepa Gillies.

The Palace 1st Grade

Last week Waverley recorded its first win of the season. This week, Waverley secured its second win with 19 – 14 point win. Woot!

Lead by Luke Kelly, who walked away with all the plaudits (winning both 3 coaches points, and three referee points), Waverley managed to secure three meat pies (Karl Gaule, Stu Allen & Adam Short) over the one time leaders of the Barraclough Cup.

Two wins on the trot is just the medicine that Waverley needed, and may be enough to spur us up the competition table. Still we remain in 9th place, and 15 points out of the top four (and one game ahead), possibly leaving our run too late for a finals berth. Still anything is possible, and Waverley’s quest to keep us out of the relegation zone, may bring some unexpected surprises.

Upcoming Round

This weekend, Waverley’s men are back on the Frog and Toad, with some tough opposition and the women looking to secure their second win of the season over Penrith at home.

Grades 1 to 4 and Colts take on Divisional heavy weights at Turramurra (where they are doubly strong), and Fifth Grade taking on Mosman (TBC, sorry working from memory).

Stay tuned for more details.

1st Win in Eight Rounds

Waverley’s The Palace 1st Grade has breathed a massive sigh of relief after securing its first win of the 2010 campaign, narrowly beaten fellow cellar dwellers, Hornsby, 23 points to 21 in an otherwise disrupted Round 9 clash.

After three weeks of persistent rain, Waverley was one of the few clubs to get on the pitch, with over 90% of all Subbies fixtures cancelled courtesy of Friday’s bucketing. Surprisingly it turned out to be a fantastic day, with Oval #2 holding up very well, allowing some fantastic rugby to be played.

On Friday we said that this was a critical round for Waverley, if it was to avoid relegation to Division Three in 2011, and what a weekend it was, with all teams putting in some fantastic efforts to keep our Div Two aspirations very much alive.

In the end, Waves walked away with wins in 1st Grade, 2nd Grade, 4th Grade and 5th Grade, a narrow loss in 3rd Grade, and a largely competitive match in Colts despite the loop sided score line.

This boosted Waverley’s lead over Hornsby in the Divisional Table to 606 points versus 359 points respectively. It also puts us within a few hundred points of some of the other clubs, and thus a chance to move up out of 9th in coming weeks.

For this to occur, Waverley needs to take the momentum gained in 1st Grade, and keep securing wins, especially over clubs like Briars, St Ives, UNSW and especially Newport this weekend.

Matches on This Weekend

Before we get stuck into the (brief) match reviews, you are reminded we are playing the washed out Round 7 clash against Newport this Saturday.

Thankfully the weather forecast looks good, meaning a Training will definitely be on Thursday, and a good chance we’ll be on Tuesday as well, with Saturday meant to be fine and sunny.

So make sure you get down to training (especially Thursday), so Waves can plot it’s course back up the competition tables.

Match Reviews

The Palace 1st Grade

In a man of the match performance, from both the referee and the Club, No. 6 Greg Quaid inspired Waverley’s The Palace 1st Grade to a hard fought and narrow first win over last placed Hornsby.

In recent weeks, especially last week against Oatley, Waverley has shown it has the ability to mix it up with the other clubs, if only it could get over its hurry to secure its first win of the season. Waves has now taken the medicine needed and will be looking to build in future weeks.

This weekends opponents, Newport, sitting in 7th place with 4 wins, is the perfect opportunity, especially with Waves playing at home.

Final Score: Waverley 23. Hornsby 21

Tries to Patrick Burke-Marcou, Josh Lose, & Kristian Parata

The Palace 2nd Grade

A bonus point 38 to 7 point win moves Waverley’s The Palace 2nd Grade to third in the Stockdale Cup, just three points behind 1st place St Ives.

Five tries were split between Stu McKay (2), Alex Laing, Tets Sakaguchi, & Jerome Wood, with four converted by Benny Farrow, in what was a convincing display by Waverley.

Coach Deon Smith would be pleased with Waverley’s form in recent weeks, with Waverley shaping up to be real finals contenders. Still it will be tough going for the Club, with six teams just separated by 7 points (and some clubs 1 game down courtesy of recent wet weather).

With Waves playing most of these over the coming rounds, Waverley must take itself very seriously if it does want to be number one in September.

3rd Grade

Waverley’s narrow 10 – 8 point loss to 5th place Hornsby in the Blunt Cup, shows that Waves is on the improve, and should be looking to pick up some more wins in coming weeks.

The 3rd Grade comp is fairly easily spread, and there is some chance, admittingly remote, for Waverley to move from it’s 10th place and secure an improbable finals berth. Rumour has it, that Coaches Collingridge and Wong are keeping a book on the matter.

Try to Kenny “Almost English” Brown.

Alexander Associates 4th Grade

Eight straight wins and 6 bonus points says it all really… Waverley having secured a 39 to 7 point win over 8th place Hornsby.

The most notable story from the day, was Waverley’s shocker with the boot, with Waverley’s ever reliable Nick Eder not able to master the blustery conditions. It wasn’t until Benny Farrow was brought on late in the match did Waverley finally convert two of its seven tries.

Final Score: Waverley 39 to Hornsby 7.

Tries to: Michael West (2), Anthony Collett, Jake Havebond, Shaun Simpson, Ben Farrow, and Matt Holani.

Cardsmart Colts

It was a disappointing round for Waverley’s Colts. After bouncing back from a forfeit the week before, Waverley put in a commendable effort to hold Hornsby in the tricky conditions.

Waves were looking good just prior to the break, only being two tries down, playing into a strong head wind. Unfortunately a temporary lapse saw Hornsby score two more tries in quick succession just before the half time whistle.

Unfortunately Waverley wasn’t able to recover after the break, eventually going down 38 points to nil.

You can check out the Photo Blog of the Colts game here.

JCB Communications and Aquila Plumbing Flying Fifths

Since its re-establishment in 2008, Waverley’s Flying Fifths have gone from strength to strength and remain one of the most desirable teams in the club to play for. Saturday was no different, with massive numbers turning out to play, which given the 9.30am kick-off was all the more remarkable.

Saturday also saw Waverley secure a great 22 to 5 point win over Convicts “#2”. Why the apostrophes? Well, courtesy of nearly every other game in Sydney being washed out, Waverley actually played a combo of both Convicts #2 (first half) and Convicts #1 in the 2nd half. Given Convicts #1 are currently undefeated, it was an impressive display by the boys.

Waverley’s Flying Fifths remain 3rd, 12 points off first placed Convicts #1. With Convicts about to head off O/S to play the Bingham Cup, there is a good chance of Waverley battling it out for 1st place against Colleagues in coming weeks.

NSW Farmers Women

Unfortunately the girls game got canned, so no match review.

Get Down to Training

Fingers crossed that the main oval dries out in enough time to get us training again on Tuesday.

Round 8 – Wet Wet Wet and Tipping Winner

Congratulations to Karin Christie for taking out the Waverley Rugby Club Super 14 Tipping Competition!

The tipping competition was very close for much of the season, that is until Karin ramped up her efforts in Round 13 to take the lead and increase her margin ever week. So you can appreciate how well Karin did. Overall she came 127th out of 73,000 entries! Woot!

Congratulations must also go to Garvin Hunter. While only finishing 14th, Garv only joined the competition in Round 6, and as you can see in the below image, his tipping results were consistently higher than average, and would have likely given Karin a run for her money had he been in the comp since Round 1.

A special note must also go to out to Finchy. Having lead the comp to Round 4, Finchy decided to utilise some unconventional tipping methods (ie pick the worst time) in the vain hope of upset victories in every game. Needless to say Finchy did what he does best, and dropped the ball.

Round 8 Review

Despite some wet weather in the lead up to the weekend, Waverley was able to get in some good game time, with all bar the Flying Fifths hitting the Frog and Toad.

For the Men, it meant a long day trip down to Sutherland, in the fall out of Lucas Heights Nuclear Reactor. Unfortunately only The Palace 2nd Grade and Alexander Associates 4th Grade were electrified enough to walk away with wins.

This means Waverley is still languishing down in 9th place in the Divisional Championships, and a long way off the form of previous seasons that saw Waverley as one of the most dominate clubs in the competition (with the exception that we really couldn’t win in the road!).

The end of the first half of the season is upon us, with Round 9 being critical to Waverley’s chances of remaining in Division Two in 2011 (our 40th Season!). Round 9 sees Waverley take on last place Hornsby, and whoever gets the better of the round (especially in 1st Grade), will have the momentum needed to secure their place in the competition.
Wet weather is again forecast to disrupt both clubs preparations, so it is a guessing game as to who will walk out on top. Certainly we need a big effort from everyone across the club to make the most of our chances.

Alexander Associates 4th Grade

Waverley’s shining light, the Alexander Associates 4th Grade is continuing its stellar form, notching up an impressive 42 – nil win over 6th placed Oatley. The win is all the more impressive given the wet conditions.

The challenge for Waverley is now to get many of these players up the grades, but still keep our great form, as we search for back to back Richardson Cup titles.

Waverley remains 1st on the ladder , 8 points (but 1 game ahead) of Newport in 2nd place.

The Palace 2nd Grade

Waverley’s 2nd Grade side kept its finals hopes alive with a tight 6 point to 5 win 9th placed Oatley. Over the years, Waverley hasn’t been known for it’s ability to kick penalties (or even take them when the opportunity arises), so it was an important development for Deon Smith’s men, and bodes well in coming weeks.

The result means Waverley now sits in 6th place in the Stockdale Cup, 3 points (and one game) behind 4th placed Barkers Old Boys and only 4 points behind Kings (same number of games).

The Rest of the Men

Unfortunately, Waverley was not able to master the conditions in the other grades, with The Palace 1st Grade losing 20 points to 6, 3rd Grade losing 17 to 7, and Cardsmart Consulting Colts losing 28 to nil (all games vs Oatley).

The results mean that 1st Grade remain winless and camped in 9th place in the Barraclough Cup, a massive 13 points behind UNSW, and only 1 point ahead of Hornsby. While 3rd Grade are marginally better in that they have recorded one win, they sit in bottom place, 5 points (and one game) behind St Ives.

For our Colts, there is still plenty of opportunity, with the Robertson Cup competition again shaping up to be a close battle. Currently the boys are in 8th position, but not too many points adrift of fighting for a top four position. A couple of wins in coming weeks, will see Waverley move back up in contention.

NSW Farmers Women

It was another tough round for Waverley’s women’s team, playing competition heavy weights, Sydney Uni, who sit equal first on the table. In the end Waverley walked away with a 52 – 0 point loss.

Still, it’s a credible result. In years gone by Uni were walking away with twice that score, showing Waverley is improving, and will be a credible force in coming seasons.

Wet Weather

As mentioned above, the forecast for the week looks crappo, and is likely to mean some changes are required for training, as well as the weekends round.

Stay tuned to the website for details.

We’ll be updating things as soon as we know.

Fantastic Round. 6 Wins from 7

Round 2 saw Waverley storm through the weekend with a series of fantastic results, winning six out of seven matches.

What a weekend it was, in beautiful spring sunshine, Waverley headed all over Sydney, with the Women playing as far as Penrith (plus Representative trials in Windsor), the Men at Concord Vs Briars and the Flying Fifths closer to home taking on Eastern Suburbs rivals, UNSW.

Unfortunately the only team to lose was 1st Grade, going down to top of the table Briars, 54 points to 15. Clearly there is a bit of work to do, if Waverley is going to be title contenders, but having taking on two very good teams in recent weeks, there is still plenty of time to move up the competition table. With two home games in a row coming up against UNSW (also yet to record a win), and St Ives (having narrowly beaten UNSW on the weekend) respectively, Waverley must quickly regroup and use these matches as a launching pad for the remainder of the year.

The Women’s 18 to 5 point win over Penrith was a great confidence boost for the girls. The full report is yet to flow through, so I’m not 100% certain whether the girls who played in the Rep trials also backed up to play a second match, or the remainder of the squad toughed it out. Either way, it’s an impressive result, and shows Waverley is on the improve this season.

Waverley’s Girls in the Rep Trials

Waverley’s glory team this year is again the boys in the Richardson Cup, with 4th Grade knocking up an impressive 60 to 0 point win over 9th placed Briars, moving Waverley to the top of the table.

This increases Waverley’s 4th Grade winning streak to 22, which is very impressive given the side is remarkable different from previous years.

Backing up 4th Grade’s efforts, Waverley’s 3rd Grade recorded a great 22 – 3 point win over Briars. With Briars having knocked off last years Premiers the week before, Waverley now knows it has the goods to build to be a competitive force in 2010. Waverley sits in 5th place, just one point out of the top four.

2nd Grade also recorded their debut win of the season, narrowly edging out Briars, 10 points to 3 in the Stockdale Cup. After Round 1’s draw against BOBs, this moves Waverley into 3rd position.

The Stockdale Cup is certainly shaping up to be a close one, with only two teams (Oatley & Hornsby) yet to get on the right side of the ledger.

In the Halligan Cup, Waverley’s Flying Fifths managed to win a thrilling 20 – 19 point thriller over UNSW. While the results UNSW top billing in the Halligan Cup (based on results rung through… typically Halligan results lag a bit), it also puts Waverley 5A’s on equal point with six other teams (including 5B’s), with another three clubs all within a point of Waverley. It should be another great season in Halligan’s.

Apologies again for the late notice of the game. Unfortunately it is the nature of Halligan’s. But the next few rounds look pretty locked in for Halligan’s. UNSW (again) this weekend, followed by Blacktown the following weekend, with both games at home with the rest of the club.

Next Two Rounds

Firstly, there are games on this weekend. Despite Monday being a Public Holiday, there is no bye! The best thing though is that all Waverley teams return home for the next two rounds. That’s right, all men’s teams (including Halligan’s), and the Women will be playing at the fortress.

More details later in the week.

Middle fo the Road. Some Work to do…

In perfect autumn weather, Waverley’s 2010 rugby season has kicked off, with Waverley taking on some quality opposition in Round One. While Saturday was always going to be a massive ask for Waverley, the season is still young and there is plenty of opportunity for us to be serious contenders this season.

Forum On It’s Way

A number of improvements to the website are still in the works. We were hoping to have launched the forum for Round 1, but are experiencing some technical issues.

In the mean time, use the comment fields below to discuss the weekend’s results.

Redfern Seven’s

After the fun of Crescent Head and Seven’s by the Sea earlier in the year, the rugby season for the women started in earnest with sevens in Redfern on 27th March, at the Indigenous Centre for Excellence.

Any new clubs who wanted to field a team this year were told they had to attend, and Sydney Uni, Warringah and Penrith had also decided to enter teams, so it was an excellent opportunity for Waverley to see how we are looking against the other clubs.

It was also time to put into practice all we’ve been learning at training, and think about where we’re all going to play for the first game of 15s. Read More→
