Waverley player 1975-1982

(8 seasons, played over 100 Club games)

And one of the original 4th Grade of 1976!

When the Club started in 1971, it fielded 2 teams, progressed to 3 teams in 1973, 4 teams in 1976, 5 teams in 1983, and then up to 9 teams by 1990.

Tony played lower grades from 1975-79 and in the hard years of the early 1980s.

Tony was part of the inaugural 4th Grade of 1976, playing prop forward and second row under the captaincy of Bill Anderson, with Joe Antico, Tony Coates, Mike Cumming, Tony Dart, Chris Delohery, Tom Donohue, Bill Farrow, Tom Hickie, Kevin Lewis, Steve Moubarak (Dec.), Brad Payten, Mike Payten, Paul Spies, Ray Stehr (Dec.), and Mike Yates – and with help from 3rd Gde players such as Graeme Beddy, Ray Eardley (Dec.), Mark Jagger (Dec.), and Bob McCoy, who doubled-up playing 4th & 3rd grades when we didn’t have enough of a front row.

According to Dave Hawkins, Club Captain, 1971-78, and President, 1979-80:

“Tony was a great clubman, full of enthusiasm and always good for a second game on a Saturday to help out – even after a few beers!”

The Club extends its sympathy to his family and friends.

"So sad, he was a great bloke."

"A sad day indeed. Jack’s life gone too soon."

"That is very sad news.  He was a good fella and a good team man."

"Another good man lost too early.  Rest in Peace Jack."

According to Dave Hawkins, Club Captain 1971-78, and President 1979-80:

"People would ask Jack on a big night out, 'When are we going home?' - but Jack never did!

Jack was one of the great clubmen.  He would play and backup when we were short - even when he had never gone to bed!"

According to Dr Tom Hickie, Social Secretary 1980-82 and President 1983-88:

"Jack Lucas was one of those who made Waverley.

When we relegated at the end of 1984, Jack Lucas stepped up and helped lay the foundaton for our golden era from 1986-1992."

A big heart.   Bled Waverley.   Great dry humour.   Loved by so many.
