Taki Toa Information

The Taki Toa tournament is an annual, invitation only, day-long Kiwi cultural festival which includes a netball tournament, food stalls, haka challenge and the event’s main attraction – the Taki Toa rugby tournament. There will also be a powhiri – a Maori welcoming ceremony – to open the festivities.

The Taki Toa tournament first started in 1983 with the help of a former Waverley Rugby Club player, Manu Sutherland, who helped create the format and ensured that the competition got off the ground. Manu’s father, Henare Sutherland, carved the distinctive and very impressive shield which stands over a metre high and requires two people to move it. Waverley are the current defending champions and have won over 14 titles over the years as well as being unbeaten from 1989 to 2004.
