Redfern Seven’s

After the fun of Crescent Head and Seven’s by the Sea earlier in the year, the rugby season for the women started in earnest with sevens in Redfern on 27th March, at the Indigenous Centre for Excellence.

Any new clubs who wanted to field a team this year were told they had to attend, and Sydney Uni, Warringah and Penrith had also decided to enter teams, so it was an excellent opportunity for Waverley to see how we are looking against the other clubs.

It was also time to put into practice all we’ve been learning at training, and think about where we’re all going to play for the first game of 15s. Read More→

Taki Toa – Rugby Report

The day started bright and early for all teams as the blessing of the ground by a local Aboriginal Elder followed by the Powhiri to welcome all teams. The draw was then done and the first game was Waverley V North lakes.

A very tough game to start the day as the score of only 10 – 0 to Waverley indicated. The Waverley team looked great in defence but had trouble retaining the ball in the tackle & in broken play. But Waverley stuck to the game plan and got on the score sheet. A great try scored early in the first half by play maker Lloyd Atkin and one to winger Cruz Hepi gave Waverley the win.

It was then a 30 min break and straight into Waverley second game against Rockdale.Waverley came out firing scoring 20 un answered points through 3 tries and one conversion and one penalty goal.Try scorers where Dez Hunter scoring one in the corner with blistering pace and 2 tries to Cruz.

Game 3 was a semi finale match against newcomers Canterbury who had been performing well all day and proved that they will be a team to look out for in future Taki Toa. The highlight of the day for many spectators was the Hakas performed by both Waverley & Canterbury that really set the pace for the game.

A tight game full of emotion took place but Waverley got home 6 – 0 thanks to two penalty goals from Lloyd Atkin a heated exchange near the end of the game was what the crowed was waiting for and they go it. But in true Taki Toa spirit both teams huddled together after the final whistle and thanked each other.

So it was the repeat of last years final Waverley V Rouse Hill. Emotions where high in both camps and it was expected to be a fast paced game as these are the 2 form teams of the day but the heavens opened on kick off and ball retention from both teams was poor. But the big hits started to take there toll on the teams and silly errors cost Waverley penalties within kicking range.

Rouse Hill pulled out to a 9 -0 lead with Waverley getting a 3 pointer late in the game and a certain try next to the post was called to be held up.3 point was not enough to keep the Shield in Bondi for another winter Rouse Hill 9 Waverley 3.

Although Waverley didn’t get the result they wanted it was still a great campaign that started over 6 weeks ago. Their fitness was a true testament to all the hard work put in by coach Deon & trainer Bill. All of this worked showed in the way Waverley defended its line with not one team getting over all day.

Co captain’s Clayton Grant & Haze Kara where very proud of their teams efforts and said that this was the best campainge that they have been involved with. They also praised the efforts and attitude and commitment of the non Maori players Ryan Wheeler , Dan & Huw Phillips, Tony Barry, Endolf and the two Aussie battlers Nicko & Phill Campbell. Special mention goes to Hepa who was the first ever winner of the Taki Toa Dennis Beaver award.

Deon and staff would like to thank all involved with getting the team on the field on the day such as Rob Stenberg from GT – EX Global Transport and Rob Proyer for his support. Karl & Kane for getting the great Taki Toa T’shirts together , Patrick for the Moko ( Maori design ) for the playing strip and Scott at ISC sports for his time in producing the Waverley strip. Also to Tiv and the Waverley Rugby club a big thank you for your support.

To Sharron Dick and her endless hours of behind the scenes work without Sharons efforts alot would have not got done. To all the wives / partners and children of the players and staff thank you all for your continued support. Bring on 2011 Taki Toa

Taki Toa – On Tomorrow

The 2010 Taki Toa Rugby and Netball Tournament is upon us and is set to be a great day out for all, so head down to Waverley Oval between 8am and 5pm to experience a day of Maori and Kiwi Culture.

Rugby and Netball tournaments will be the centre of the action, but with a range of stalls selling traditional Maori food and artefacts together with cultural performances from the Te Mana Frigate, as well as the exciting Haka Challenge.

Waverley Rugby Club goes into the tournament as the team to beat, having won the Taki Toa Shield more times than any other club, and more times than all the other clubs combined!

Waves earned the right to host the tournament as 2009 Champions and is looking to again host in 2011.

Waverley’s competition will be very tough, with Rockdale, Rouse Hill, Merrylands, Canterbury and North Lakes all looking to steal the impressive shield off Waverley.

Rouse Hill (2008 Champions) in particular will be looking to seek revenge after narrowly losing to Waverley in the 2009 edition. As one of the strongest up and coming clubs in the Subbies Comp, Waves will be keeping a close eye on their form throughout the day.

In the Netball Comp, last years winners Poi Turaki aren’t making a return will all eyes instead looking towards North Lakes, the 2009 Runners Up.

Waverley, having finished 5th last year, will be looking to improve, especially as the tournament will be one of many under the Waverley banner in 2010.

4 Waverley Girls compete at the Ella 7’s

The weekend began with the long drive up to Coffs Harbour. Amanda, Bianca and Gemma were off to play for the South Sydney Kingfishers, and Velesha was off to play for Logan Women. All girls were excited to take part in this event which represents Indigenous Rugby at its best.

The Saturday morning began nice and early for Bianca, Amanda and Gemma with a 9am game, but rising at 7am for a team breakfast and to wish the boys’ team good luck.

After a rocky ride to the field the girls were there and ready to go against the Condobolin Cougars. Unfortunately the opposition didn’t show until 3 minutes before the end of the scheduled game. However, they played a fun friendly game anyway for a shortened time ending, in a nil all draw.

With the nerves out of the way it was onto their next game against the very tough and very well organized Redfern.

The Redfern game was full of big girls and even bigger hits! The Waverley girls are proud to report they were all on best behaviour during a game which saw two of the Redfern girls yellow carded at the same time. The game ended in controversy with the Touch Judge not allowing one of them back on when their time was up and the Redfern player going on anyway.

The game ended with a great smile of relief from the Waverley girls who had all managed to survive! Gemma even found a new love for the game; coming into her own as a great half back she was leading the team around the paddock like the best of the best.

This game ended in a 7-14 loss, although it must be noted that Redfern did go on to beat Murri Magic 22-20 in the final to take out the women’s division.

The last game of the day for South Sydney Kingfishers (aka 3 Waverley girls and some friends and acquaintances) was against Waterloo Storm, the defending champions. With the Kingfishers carrying a few injuries, this was going to be tough! The game began with the Waverley girls looking up and seeing the faces of some of the girls who they see week to week in the normal Sydney 15’s comp.

However, with the skills on our side we knew we could give them a run for their money, and as expected running over the line first was the South Sydney Kingfishers. Then next to score were Waterloo, just before the half time hooter. A conversion from them put them two points ahead. In the second half although a mighty fight was put forward Waterloo managed to cross the line one more time. With the final hooter going the score was 14-5 and the Waverley girls were proud of their efforts.

With Velesha in another team we only heard of her efforts from Lynette who was up there to organise these Waverley girls (ohh yeah, and to watch some rugby). According to all reports Velesha played amazingly, with her team winning some and losing some.

This was a wonderful tournament with a great atmosphere. Thanks go to the fantastic people who put it all together. All the girls are looking forward to this trip again next year.

Volunteers Needed for Taki Toa

Saturday sees Waverley hosting the 2010 Taki Toa Rugby and Netball Tournament.

This is an important day for the club, not only are we looking to again retain the Taki Toa Shield, but are looking to host a fantastic tournament.

Volunteers are urgently required to help out throughout the day, from helping with set up to helping run the canteen, and a few other odds and ends.

We only need a few hours of your time, so if you’re able to help contact the Club to put your hand up. We’ll be approaching a number of you to ask anyway, so you may as well get in first.

Why should you help out?

Not only will it mean we’ll put on a great event, but it is a great potential source of income for the Club, and helps keep your subs as some of the lowest in Subbies Rugby.

Taki Toa Players

Are you playing in the Taki Toa? If so, you must be registered. I know I’m harping on about it, but you CANNOT play unless you have completed a registration for Waverley Rugby Club.

To complete your registration; go to:

More details to come.

Match Report – Sevens by the Sea

Last Saturday the Waverley Women took what they learned from Crescent Head sevens to take a stronger and more experienced squad for Sevens by the Sea, held at Porter’s Reserve near Newport.

As one of the “local” teams, Waverley was first on the field against the more realistically local team, Warringah. We knew what to expect in this game, and the Rats didn’t disappoint. We made life hard for ourselves by arriving late to Newport, so running on feeling a bit disorganised and with no real game plan. However, we put up a good fight, and stopped a great number of tries. Final score of 41 to nil is pretty respectable against a team led by the Australian captain.

During the hour until our second game guest coach Frosty was scribbling madly trying to get a handle on who all these new girls were, and trying to remember the names of those of us he did coach in 2008. Names have never been his strong point!

Sadly the best laid plans were somewhat screwed up by an mis-communication between Karin and Vicki which resulted in some very red-faced girls coming off at half time wondering why nobody had been subbed on for them after 4 minutes. Suck it up girls – now you know what Crescent Head felt like!

The second half of this game (against Hunter) was much better as the girls finally found some cohesion and began playing as a team. Sadly the scores at the end were again nil to Waverley, but this time only 24 to the opposition.

Our first game after lunch was against Sydney Uni, an opposition that raises a lot of passion amongst the Waverley girls. Having lost a couple of players to them this year, we have a point to prove. Sadly this wasn’t the day to do it, and the beat us 32 points to nil.

However, in this game Waverley’s previously hidden talents were really beginning to shine through. Secret weapon Gen shows she has the speed to chase the Sydney Uni girls, and the confidence to put in a few big tackles – not bad for a girl who’s only played touch and oz-tag before. Bree also showed some good chasing skills, and Tash’s tackling was noted as “awesome” by those watching.

Our final game of the day had us meeting the unknown Redfern Legends, a team mostly comprising the indigenous girls from the Sydney area who are heading to the Ella Seven’s this weekend. However, there was at least one familiar face on the team, as Velesha decided to play with them rather than us, on the grounds that they had less girls than us, and she is playing with them this weekend. Don’t worry V, we don’t hold it against you (much), just drag some of them down to Waverley soon.

This game finally saw some Waverley points on the board! A commanding run from Amanda set Sarah up for the first try of her rugby career, and in all probability her last as a Waverley girl. Sarah – are you sure we can’t send Andy to Noosa and keep you here?

Final score 5 to Waverley, 12 to Redfern.

It was now time to sit back for the rest of the afternoon and enjoy watching the semis and finals. The highlight of the day…watching Warringah finally lose a game AND be kept scoreless in the final against ACT…proof that even the best teams make mistakes and have off days!

All in all the day went well, despite not chalking up a win. The girls gained some valuable experience and with the exciting additions to the team, it’s looking really positive for the season ahead.

That would be a good point to end this report, apart from some excitement on Newport beach before the drive home…

Spuddy was just having a cooling dip in the ocean when her legs started to cramp up. Nurse Cat has little patience (maybe too many complaining patients on a daily basis) and told her to “just stretch them out”, but luckily Bree was close enough to help her, and ensured that our #1 prop didn’t end up as fish-food.

Alls well that ends well. See you all at training during the week.
