Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. The Clock Struck (Round) One

Round 1 of the 2011 super Subbies rugby season is here, with all the action bish and bash kicking off this Saturday 2nd April 2011. And what a season it will be!

2011 marks 40 glorious years of Waverley Rugby Club, from its humble beginnings way back in 1971.

In that 40 years, Waverley has won seven Division Championships (including four consecutive Div 1 Championships between 1989 and 1992), 34 Premierships (including a record equalling three consecutive Kentwell Cups (1st Grade – Div 1 between 1989 to 1991), fielded a Women’s team for the last 10 years, and had over 10,000 players pulling on the mighty Blue and Gold jersey that is Waverley.

2011 sees Waverley is back in Division Three of the NSW Suburban Rugby Union, after a disastrous season in 2010 that saw Waves relegated from Div Two. This clearly was not the way Waverley was hoping to move into its 40th Year (a move up to Div 1 would have been preferred), but the signs are all there that Waverley’s 2011 should be successful both on and off the field.

Round 1 sees Waverley’s men’s team launch their campaign at home against the boys from Hawkesbury Valley. The matches between the two clubs are always close affairs with the clubs last battling it out in Waverley’s highly successful 2007 Season.

Predicting form at the start of the season is always difficult, especially when you’re the new boys to a Division. If you were to go off last years results, Hawkesbury Valley will provide tough opposition for Waverley.

Unfortunately the girls are heading out to Penrith (Jamison Park – Kickoff 2pm) so won’t be there for most of the day, but will try and make it back for post match speeches at the Bowlo. For the Girls, Round 1 is a great opportunity for the girls. After a massive off season recruitment drive, some excellent training and performances in numerous sevens tournaments, the girls are a mighty good chance to record their first win of the season against close rivals Penrith.

For the men, kick off times are as follows:
12pm – 4th Grade
12.55pm – 3rd Grade
2.00pm – 2nd Grade
3.15pm – 1st Grade

Further details will be provided later in the week. Get down to Waverley Oval Saturday!!!!

Game Details 24/07 – Quick Update

Yes, tomorrow’s games are definitely on!

Tomorrow sees all men’s teams play at home (subject to weather that is), and the women away to Sydney Uni.

For the men, they are chasing points in every grade as we need as many Divisional Championship Points to stay in Div 2 in 2011, and no one wants to start our 40th Anniversary down a Division. The oppo for them is Kings Old Boys, and Colleagues in Halligan.

Kings sit 3rd on the competition table and will be tough oppo. Apparently they are targetting an upset win in 4th Grade, so Waves Alexander Associates boys better be on the look out.

Kings are always tough oppo, tend to pick up steam towards the end of the season, so watch up.

Wet Weather

As a result of the forecast, there may be some last minute changes to the matches, so stay tuned to the website first thing tomorrow morning.

Flying Fifths will be the ones that are effected.

In the event of Oval #1 being closed, we’ll be bumping Grades 1 to 4 and Colts on to the back oval, and the Flying Fifths will be bumped to Colleagues at Rose Bay.

Kick off times are as follows:

10.30am – Colts
12.00pm – 4th Grade
12.00pm – 5th Grade (#2 Oval)
12.55pm – 3rd Grade
2.00pm – 2nd Grade
3.15pm – 1st Grade

Post Match Speeches – Wallabies vs Boks

Post match speeches will again be held at The Palace. With the Wallabies playing the Springboks on Saturday night, make sure you stick around to watch the game.

Ladies Day – Now August 14

Because of the wet weather, we’ve decided to bump Ladies Day to the last home game on August 14.

All Teams at Home. Great Weather Forecast

It’s been quite some time, but all seven teams are at home tomorrow under perfect blue skies, for a series of great clashes against Hunters Hill (all men’s teams) and Warringah (women).

It is another formidable round for Waverley, with Hunters Hill and Warringah currently both 2nd in their respective competitions, and both on sizzling form in recent rounds. See below for more details. Read More→

Brrr it’s cold – Perfect for Ruggers this Weekend!

If you are like most people in this club, chances are you’ve come from a climate which is much colder than Sydney. In your first year here, it was probably the mildest winter you’ve ever had and you probably swam in the ocean every month (note the ocean temp is still a balmy 20.4 degrees). Then comes your second winter, and you freeze your bum off. If this is you, right now your pulling out your puffer jacket and complaining how cold it is. At least it’s no longer raining.

The good thing about this weather, is that it is perfect for rugby, with Waverley playing the washed out Round 7 match against Newport this Saturday. That is right, Waves is playing rugby this long weekend.

No one likes playing rugby on a long weekend, when there are other things to be done, but we need everyone on deck. One in. All in. So get your bum down to training tonight, and keep Saturday free. (Note, there are no Womens or Flying Fifths games this weekend).

Previews

The Palace 1st Grade

Fresh from their first win of the season and recent good form, Waverley has a great chance to knock off their more fancied opponents.

Having started the season on a high and leading the competition, Newport have suffered a form slump in recent weeks suffering three losses on the trot.

It being a long weekend, combined with Newport requiring a big trip, presents Waverley with a fantastic opportunity to record its second win and move us further out of the danger zone of Divisional Relegation.

The Palace 2nd Grade

In recent seasons, Waverley and Newport have been the form teams in the Stockdale Cup competition. This season both teams find themselves further away from the top of the comp than they would normally be, the round is set to be a tough encounter as both try to move onwards and upwards.

Just four points and one match is all that separates Waverley (3rd) and Newport (6th), so it is a pretty tough call who goes into the round favourite. However, for the victor it is either a chance to either take 1st place (in Waverley’s case, depending on other results), or for Newport to move into the top four (again depending on other results). A lot is at stake.

While Waves probably goes into the match as narrow favourites courtesy of the home game, the result is too hard to call. Certainly it is the match of the Round.

3rd Grade

After recording a narrow loss on the weekend, Waverley’s third grade will be turning their attention to securing their 2nd win of the season, an eminently possible feat given Newport has only secured one more win their Waverley (but are two games down).

A win will certainly give Waverley a chance to move out of last place, given perennial competition for the wooden spoon, St Ives are taking on 3rd place Kings.

Alexander Associates 4th Grade

The Round 7 replay in the Richardson Cup is the top of the table clash, with Waverley on 38 points and Newport on 25 points, but two games down. It will probably be Waverley’s toughest match, with Newport showing they can consistently put on big scores, taking four, four try bonus points in the season so far.

No doubt Waverley goes in favourites after winning 28 games on the trot. Will this be their first loss?

Cardsmart Consulting Colts

Courtesy of some new blood joining the club in recent weeks, Waverley’s form is on the improve in the Under 21 (U21) Robertson Cup.

Newport will be some tough oppo though. Sitting 3rd on the table, they have beaten the top two teams of the competition. However, they also lost to 8th place UNSW (who Waverley would have been ahead of if we hadn’t lost 4 competition points as result of the Oatley forfeit) last weekend. Waverley can’t take too much hope from that result, as it was bloody wet, and it may have been the wake up call Newport needed to return them to top form.

Ladies Day

Put it in your diary now. Ladies Day is set for 24 July 2010 (home game against Kings). More details to come.

Clicky Click… We’re on tomorrow

Clicky Click? WTF? Well that pretty much sums up training & games the last few weeks. With all the beautiful weather we’ve been having, heaps of emails, SMS, website updates, phone calls etc have been flying around the ether to make sure everyone knows what’s going on.

With rain currently pouring down, today looks like it will be no different.

Here’s the sitch…

All Men’s Games are On

The main oval swimming pool is currently closed and the chance of it opening ahead of tomorrows games are precisely 0.000001532%. That’s right, sweet %&#* all.

So we’ve moved ALL men’s games to the number two pitch, with all the action kicking off at a spritely 9.30am, and going through until 5pm (just another day at the office eh?).

Women’s Game

No news yet on the women’s game, but if this weather holds up it looks like the back up option will also be rained off, so stay in touch with Karin. Further updates will be posted here once known.

Round Review

After a two week hiatus (well three weeks since they played their last game), the JCB Communications / Aquila Plumbing Flying Fifths are kicking off all the action, at a choice time of 9.30am.

Up against Colleagues Convicts #2, Waverley goes into the match favourites. The only risk to the outcome is that the Convicts #1 team might get rained off resulting in a last minute change of opposition. With the Convicts sides about to jet off overseas for the Bingham Cup, the game could be tougher than expected.

Following through at the usual times the rest of the grades face an important test. Currently sitting 9th in the Divisional table, Waverley faces 10th place Hornsby. The winner of the Round will take the momentum have the best chance of staying in Div Two in 2011. The loser… Need I say more?

For those of you wanting to know, the Divisional Table is calculated by multiplying the total competition points secured by a team by the following factors:

1st Grade – x22
2nd Grade – x12
3rd Grade – x6
Colts – x6
4th Grade – x3

Currently Waverley has secured 437 Championship Points. The combinations from each grade are made up as follows:

1st Grade – 2 x 22 = 44
2nd Grade – 19 x 12 = 228
3rd Grade – 5 x 6 = 30
Colts – 6 x 6 = 36*
4th Grade – 33 x 3 = 99

* Colts had 4 competition points and 24 Championship points removed as a result of forfeiting to Oatley.

As you can see, Waverley’s lack of wins in first grade is the thing that is keeping us down the table with 2nd Grades success keeping us in the mix, supported by 4th Grade.

What’s the moral of the story? Put simply never give up. With Championship points awarded on bonus points as well as grade wins. Remember bonus points are secured for four or more tries, or losing by less than 7 points.

Back to reality…

The toughest games for Waverley will be in Colts, 3rd Grade and 1st Grade.

For The Palace 1st Grade, both clubs will be looking for their first win of the season, with Waverley in 9th, just one bonus point ahead, and Hornsby in 10th. The last time Waverley played Hornsby at home (in similar conditions to this weekend), Waverley thumped Hornsby. But things are different. Then Waverley was fighting for a chance at finals, now Waverley is fighting to avoid relegation.

Given the weather conditions and that Waverley is playing at home, you’d think Waves would have the edge, but you never know.

Waverley’s 3rd Grade only sit 9 points behind Hornsby, presenting the boys with a great opportunity to secure their second win of the year. For Hornsby, they will be looking to rebuild and defend their 2009 competition title.

After a disastrous trip to away to Oatley which saw Waverley’s Cardsmart Colts forfeit because of a lack of numbers (wet weather / last minute changes / lost players the reasons), Waverley is looking to regroup, and move back up the table. Courtesy of losing points as a result of the forfeit, Waverley title’s hopes have taken a blow. That said the boys still have the talent to secure a potential finals berth, with that challenge starting this week.

Waverley’s two finals hopes remain The Palace 2nd Grade (just three points and one game off 4th place) and Alexander Associates 4th Grade (sitting pretty at the top of the table).

In the Stockdale Cup, Hornsby sit bottom of the table, presenting Waverley a ripe opportunity to pluck a win, and a much needed bonus point, if Waverley can master the tricky conditions.

In the Richardson Cup, Waverley is well clear, and remain favourites to rack up their 8th win of the season.

Get Down to Waverley Oval Early

With the lack of training in recent weeks, all players are requested to get to the ground early (ie well before the time you think you’re playing). This will enable Waves to cover any unexpected holes, and give us plenty of time to warm up and discuss tactics.

Kick off times are as follows:

9.30am – 5th Grade
10.45am – Colts
12.00pm – 4th Grade
12.55pm – 3rd Grade
2.00pm – 2nd Grade
3.15pm – 1st Grade

Please try and stick around for as long as possible. Yes I know it will be wet and cold, but your support will be critical to Waves success on the field.

Head to the Palace

Don’t forget to head to the Palace for Post Match Speeches.

Also thanks to all those that turned up to the Palace last night. It was a great night.

2009 NSWSRU Player Survey

At the end of 2009, the NSW Suburban Rugby Union conducted a survey of all registered Subbies Rugby players, primarily focusing on the length of the rugby season.

Well, the results are in. Head to the Subbies Website (linkidy link here), for a summary of the results.

The short of it is, the season will remain at 18 rounds, but there will be a guaranteed bye weekend from 2012 (the RWC gets in the way of doing it in 2011).
