For trial 1, Waverley Rugby made the small jump to the Inner West, to supposedly play Canterbury and new club, Alexandria, in a trial. Supposedly? Well, the smell of a rain was a little bit too much for the new boys from Alexandria, so they went home to their mum’s place for devonshire tea. Apparently Alexandria are known as “The Dukes”. More like “The Dukes of (Water) Hazards”. Sorry, that was a terrible line…
Ever played at Canterbury Rugby’s ground, Wills Oval? If you have, you’ll note it sits about 1m above the adjacent Cooks River. Courtesy of all the summer rain, Canterbury was flush with green green grass. Yehp that’s ok, but the length was halfway up your legs, and it was hiding the fact that the nights rain left another 3cm of water on top.
Needless to say, this sorted out the men from the boys, or more appropriately which Brits have been in country too long (looking at you Kenny Brown) and who have forgotten what it is like to play in these conditions week in week out.
Here is hoping conditions improve in future weeks.
