With Sydney having experienced some of its coldest June temperatures in 40 years, it is thankful that this weekends games will all be ‘local’ with the men playing the second round of the Eastern Suburbs Derby against UNSW at Daceyville and the Women hosting Penrith at Waverley Oval for the second time in three weeks.
It’s an interesting round for the Club, and represents a pretty good opportunity for Waverley to get a number of wins across the board, as both UNSW and Penrith like Waverley and struggling for form.
While both lots of oppo are generally higher up the table, Waverley goes in underdogs, but with a great chance none the less.
The Women again return to the main oval at home for the second time this year, but will be looking to turn around its futures after suffering a 34 to 15 point loss to Penrith two weeks ago.
That result means that Waverley and Penrith have recorded both a win and loss against each other. With Waverley having lost one of its star players, Helen Blevins, last weekend, it will be a tough round for Waverley.
Kick off is at 11am, on Waverley Oval.
Go Girls!
That’s right all men’s teams (Grades 1 to 4, Colts and Flying Fifths) are up against UNSW this weekend.
Waverley is away to UNSW, with a short hop down to Daceyville. Kick off times are as follows:
Colts – 10.30am
4th Grade – 12.00pm
3rd Grade – 12.55pm
Flying Fifths – 1.00pm (DP#2)
2nd Grade – 2.00pm
1st Grade – 3.15pm

Recent weeks have seen UNSW with some indifferent form, yo-yoing through wins (over St Ives and Newport) and losses (Briars and Hunters Hill), with the last result being a win. If UNSW are to stay true to form, Waverley goes into the round with a great chance of securing it’s third win of the season.
Everyone knows that it isn’t going to be as easy as that, and Waverley has a lot of work to do if it is going to secure an upset win. Still, opportunities abound, and if Waverley can bounce back from a disappointing loss, it has everything to gain.
Like 1st Grade, Waverley Stockdale Cup hopefuls are looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss to Briars last week.
Waves currently sit in 5th, 7 points (and one game) outside of the top four. With UNSW just four points behind Waverley, this is a most win game for the Blue and Gold, preferably with a bonus point, with Waverley needing the moment as it heads into upcoming matches against three of the top four teams (St Ives, Kings and Hunters Hill) in coming weeks.
If you go on competition table, Waverley has no chance of winning this weekend, in what is a top (UNSW) versus bottom (Waves) clash in the Blunt Cup.
Luckily life isn’t that simple, and with UNSW having recorded two losses on the trot to 9th place St Ives last week, and 7th place Hunters Hill the week prior to that.
Can Waverley make it three losses in a row?
Here is hoping so, as we really do need ever point we can get in Divisional Championship in order to keep us in Div Two in 2010.
It’s a 1st vs 3rd Clash this weekend in the Richardson Cup. Waverley is confident they will remain undefeated this weekend, and UNSW are confident that they can change that.
An interesting battle will ensue in the Robertson Cup, with both teams on 14 points, with Waves 8th, and UNSW 9th on the competition Table. In reality Waverley has won one game more, but lost those points courtesy of the forfeit to Oatley.
Last time, Waverley gut the rub of the result, with a big win over UNSW, and is looking to repeat again this time.
Heading into the match, both Waverley and UNSW are a bit light on numbers, so it will be interesting to see which way things fall this time.
Both clubs have already played each other twice, with Waverley walking away victors both times.
As per usual, it should be a good match up between the two clubs.

All round it was a shocker on the weekend. Not just because we lost every grade bar 4th Grade, but because of the lack of general support on the weekend.
This was highlighted in two ways. 1) Lack of bods making their way to Turramurra in a crucial round against BOBs, especially when there was some good chances for some upset victories and 2) those that did turn up didn’t stick around to support / back up etc, generally stuffing up our chances of wins across the grades.
All in all it wasn’t too good, and can’t be repeated, otherwise it’s down we go in 2011. Read More→

Quoting the Ernest Shackleton family motto is not how we normally start match previews, but it is a great metaphor for this weekends daunting task. I know I know… many of you are thinking, “WTF? We’re a rugby club, why are we talking about metaphors and Ernest Shackleton?â€.
This weekend, Waverley heads into a very tough encounter, against run-away competition leaders, Barkers Old Boys (BOBs). Put simply, we wanted to be where they are, but unfortunately we’re languishing down the bottom end of the table, and instead of fighting for promotion to Div 1, we’re fighting to stay in Div 2.
But all is not lost by endurance, we can conquer, and it all starts here. With a return to form by most grades the last few weeks, there is a good chance of a few upset wins this weekend. Make no mistake, it will be a very tough encounter, BOBs are a formidable opponent, and more so at home, where they generally sit first on the “home game ladder†in most grades. That said, some cracks have started to appear. Read more below! Read More→
Round 2 saw Waverley storm through the weekend with a series of fantastic results, winning six out of seven matches.
What a weekend it was, in beautiful spring sunshine, Waverley headed all over Sydney, with the Women playing as far as Penrith (plus Representative trials in Windsor), the Men at Concord Vs Briars and the Flying Fifths closer to home taking on Eastern Suburbs rivals, UNSW.
Unfortunately the only team to lose was 1st Grade, going down to top of the table Briars, 54 points to 15. Clearly there is a bit of work to do, if Waverley is going to be title contenders, but having taking on two very good teams in recent weeks, there is still plenty of time to move up the competition table. With two home games in a row coming up against UNSW (also yet to record a win), and St Ives (having narrowly beaten UNSW on the weekend) respectively, Waverley must quickly regroup and use these matches as a launching pad for the remainder of the year.
The Women’s 18 to 5 point win over Penrith was a great confidence boost for the girls. The full report is yet to flow through, so I’m not 100% certain whether the girls who played in the Rep trials also backed up to play a second match, or the remainder of the squad toughed it out. Either way, it’s an impressive result, and shows Waverley is on the improve this season.

Waverley’s glory team this year is again the boys in the Richardson Cup, with 4th Grade knocking up an impressive 60 to 0 point win over 9th placed Briars, moving Waverley to the top of the table.
This increases Waverley’s 4th Grade winning streak to 22, which is very impressive given the side is remarkable different from previous years.
Backing up 4th Grade’s efforts, Waverley’s 3rd Grade recorded a great 22 – 3 point win over Briars. With Briars having knocked off last years Premiers the week before, Waverley now knows it has the goods to build to be a competitive force in 2010. Waverley sits in 5th place, just one point out of the top four.
2nd Grade also recorded their debut win of the season, narrowly edging out Briars, 10 points to 3 in the Stockdale Cup. After Round 1’s draw against BOBs, this moves Waverley into 3rd position.
The Stockdale Cup is certainly shaping up to be a close one, with only two teams (Oatley & Hornsby) yet to get on the right side of the ledger.
In the Halligan Cup, Waverley’s Flying Fifths managed to win a thrilling 20 – 19 point thriller over UNSW. While the results UNSW top billing in the Halligan Cup (based on results rung through… typically Halligan results lag a bit), it also puts Waverley 5A’s on equal point with six other teams (including 5B’s), with another three clubs all within a point of Waverley. It should be another great season in Halligan’s.
Apologies again for the late notice of the game. Unfortunately it is the nature of Halligan’s. But the next few rounds look pretty locked in for Halligan’s. UNSW (again) this weekend, followed by Blacktown the following weekend, with both games at home with the rest of the club.
Firstly, there are games on this weekend. Despite Monday being a Public Holiday, there is no bye! The best thing though is that all Waverley teams return home for the next two rounds. That’s right, all men’s teams (including Halligan’s), and the Women will be playing at the fortress.
More details later in the week.
If you haven’t already, make sure you have a read of the News article about upcoming functions. Some crackers are planned over the next month, so put them into your diary now.
This weekend sees Waves head west, with the men making the short hop to Briars in Concord, and the women travelling a bit further to play Penrith.
For Waverley the weekend is racked with opportunity. For the men, it’s a chance to redeem a relatively poor away performance in 2009, and bounce back from the Round 1 results.
For the women, traditionally Penrith and Waverley have been very close in competition, and this weekend should represent one of their best chances to secure competition points, and further cement combinations for future rounds. But with a number of players on representative duty, it will be a tough road trip for the girls.
Before I go any further, a big apology to the Flying Fifths. Unfortunately Briars have pulled out at the last minute of the 5th Grade Halligan match, so we are looking for some other oppo for the Flying Fifths. Given the late notice, we’re scrambling for some oppo, but we’ll advise a new game as soon as possible. Read More→
