Newport Ten’s Report

Saturday saw Waverley head out of the eastern suburbs for the first run out of the season at the annual Newport 10’s tournament.

First up after an extensive 2 minute warm up including a brief “what’s your name mate” session, Waverley faced Newport’s first team on their home turf. Despite going down 4-0, Waverley stuck at it and steadily improved as the game progressed.

An 1 ½ hour wait for the next game gave Waverley plenty of time to regroup, finally warm up properly and start discussing tactics.

Next up came Silver Bullets. Again, the result didn’t go our way eventually losing 4-1 but Waverley was much improved and after an inspired tactical substitution and a fortuitous penalty move from Andre, Billy crossed the line for a well deserved try.

In the final game the team faced Cabcon after another 1 ½ hour wait which did Waverley no favours. Despite everyone being tired and confidence being knocked after conceding an early try, Waverley continued to stick at it, building on the previous two games and with some great team work and effort we ended the first half down by two tries to one. We’d finally been rewarded with a well deserved try following some determined team play when Chris crossed the line late in the first half. In the second half with confidence on the up and the team playing undoubtedly their best rugby of the day, Waverley equalised when Sam crossed the line – was a surprise win on the cards?

Unfortunately not… Waverley was unable to hold on to the lead after the ball which appeared to have crossed the dead ball line bizarrely rolled back in to play. We eventually lost 3-2 but it was a great effort all around.

A big well done to all of the boys and a good day was had by all!

Photos from the day can be found on our Flickr page.

First up, Waverley’s Alexander Associates 4th Grade will be playing in the Major Semi Final against Newport. The match review is pretty simple. Waverley is expected to win. Being largely untroubled all year, playing close to home, and looking to record their 39th straight win, all point to Waves walking in a favourites.

Still stranger things have happened in finals…

Details are:

11.20am Kick off
Dave Phillips Playing Fields
Cnr Banks & Gwea Ave
Daceyville (ie UNSW home ground)

Waverley’s other game, is a match against Sydney’s confused (do I barrack for NSW, or QLD?) Inner West team, Petersham. The round was meant to decide who was going to finish in the top three, but courtesy of 3 all a mid week draw between the two sides last week, Waves is locked out of the top four, and sits comfortably in 5th place.

It being the last round of the season for the two clubs, no doubt it will be a great match, especially as it will be playing on Waverley #1. Rumour has it, there will be a pub crawl afterwards if you want to join them.

Previews and Details

NSW Farmers Women

While the men go hunting all over Sydney, the women play host to Merrylands at Waverley Oval at 11.00am.

On the back of last weekends win, and some mighty fine performances the weeks prior, this one has screams a great opportunity for Waves to take an upset win.

The girls will be up against it, but Waverley’s performance is heading in the right direction.

Men’s Games Vs Newport

The trek up to Newport is another important one for Waverley. Not only to keep us clear of Hornsby, but to keep The Palace 2nd Grade in the finals hunt, to salvage some pride across the underperforming teams.

A loss in 2nd Grade will seal Waverley’s fate and see us miss out on a finals berth, where as a win will still keep us on track, depending on the results over the weekend.

In 1st Grade, Newport will be seeking redemption after the Round 7 loss to Waverley. In what was Waverley’s first win of the season and only one of two, Waves will be looking to secure another 4 points off our fellow sea-side club.

One of third grades two wins of the season was also against Newport, with the Breakers team just marginally a head of Waverley in the Blunt Cup. It would be a great one-two combination if 1st and 3rd Grade could both get back on the right side of the scoresheet.

For the third week in a row, Waverley’s most successful team of the season, the Alexander Associates 4th Grade, will be playing a top of the table clash. A massive 17 points separate the two sides, but with Waverley being light on in numbers on recent trips away, Waves may be a risk of faltering just ahead of the finals, however unlikely this is. It’s still hard to see Waverley losing this one.

Down and out on their luck, the Cardsmart Consulting Colts, have a tough ask. After a disappointing start, that saw numbers drop off, the guys have struggled through recent weeks. Combining this with a trip to Newport, and an early start, we really need the guys to pull together, for the last three rounds.

Flying Fifths Vs Blacktown

Waverley’s Halligan Cup team has put on some entertaining displays in recent weeks, and this week looks no different, with just three points separating the two clubs.

Who knows which way it will fall, but the bus trip out the Blacktown will certainly make for a great day out.

Giddy Up! 4 out of 5!

Waverley Rugby Club has enjoyed its best outing of 2010 winning an impressive four out of five games against Newport, on a perfect winters day in Sydney.

After weeks of crappy weather rained off Waverley’s Round 7 – May 22nd clash, Waverley made the most of its June Long Weekend encounter against fellow seaside club Newport, with The Palace 2nd Grade the only team to go down.

And what a great day it was. Perfect sunny skies, but with cool temps, made it the perfect way to make up for a missing out on a weekend of rugby, and even better was the impressive display by all teams to take it up to our higher ranked opponents.

The successful round marginally increases our margin over last placed Hornsby, but only marginally because Hornsby also had a successful weekend too, with an upset win over finals contenders Kings Old Boys in the Barraclough Cup. Maybe this is a good sign for Waverley, that it can build on it’s two wins on the trot in 1st Grade, to challenge those teams higher up the ladder.

Props Wanted

Read today’s other news article, Want to be a Waverley Prop Star. Waves is in desperate need of some front row blood, so if you’re aware of any potentials, or want to have a go yourself, let us know.

Match Reviews

Reading through the preview from last week (brr it’s cold…), the predictions were largely (and thankfully) correct.

For Waverley, the round represents the half way point of the Home and Away, and is a good chance to see where we are sitting and what finals hopes we may have. Unfortunately four other clubs are still one round behind and with Hunters Hill two rounds behind, thus making real comparisons difficult.

But we’ll try!

Cardsmart Consulting Colts

Waverley walked out of the day with a thrilling 12 to 11 point win over (then) 3rd placed Newport. As the only team to have beaten 1st place Barkers Old Boys, this is a great result for Waverley, and vindicates a lot of effort put into the squad in recent weeks.

Unfortunately, the margin should have been higher, with Waverley about to secure another try when the ref decided that advantage had been played, so called Waverley back to a penalty.

I know, Waves may have fouled in the interim period, but don’t let the facts get in the way of a good story.

Unfortunately I can’t tell you who the try scorers were, as the team sheet shows Michael Hatten, Steve Fairburn and Matt Hamilton all scoring tries, despite Waverley only securing 12 points.

The result leaves Waverley in 9th place (as opposed to the 14 we should have been on had we not forfeited against Oatley), making the task of qualifying for the finals very difficult.

With Waverley ~14 points off the top four (but one game ahead), it is still theoretically possible for Waverley to make it through to the finals, but it will be a massive ask, with Waverley needing to win virtually every game here in.

Alexander Associates 4th Grade

In a top of the table clash Waverley continued it’s unbeaten run, and firmly entrenches itself in top position.

The next four weeks sees Waverley play the balance of the top six teams. If past performance is an indicator Waverley is unlikely to be knocked off it’s perch.

Waverley remains odds on favourites for back to back Premierships

Final score 26-0, with tries to Tainui Wynyard, Anthony Collett and Rob Pryor.

3rd Grade

Storming into its 2nd win of the season in the Blunt Cup, Waverley sits on equal points with Hunters Hill and St Ives (two and one games down respectively), with a great chance to move itself out of 10th place in coming weeks.

Like Colts before them, Waverley scraped through with a narrow one point (20 – 19) win over Newport, with tries to Steve Hearn (2), Mark Lee, and Bobby Hopper (WTF, three out of the four tries came from props, no doubt sea gulling).

It was an important win for 3rd Grade, because despite sitting in last place, they have a very realistic chance of making the finals, being just 13 points (and same number of games) as 3rd placed Barkers Old Boys.

With nine rounds to go, Waverley needs to continue its recent good form, and it will be in a shot of making the finals. The next few weeks will be critical for Waverley’s success.

The Palace 2nd Grade

Last week we tipped this as the match of the round, with two top billing sides battling for a position in the top four. Unfortunately for Waverley, they went down 20 points to 12, plus missed out on an all important bonus point.

In the end, this dropped Waverley out of 2nd place, down to 6th place, which just shows you how competitive the Stockdale Cup is again this season, with just seven points separating the top 7 teams.

While Waverley remains in a strong position to secure a finals berth, the next few weeks sees Waverley take on the top four sides. Waverley needs to use these matches to build for a possible premiership, plus to keep traction in the Divisional Championship (2nd Grade are still carrying the rest of the club in this regards).

Both tries to rampaging No. 8, Hepa Gillies.

The Palace 1st Grade

Last week Waverley recorded its first win of the season. This week, Waverley secured its second win with 19 – 14 point win. Woot!

Lead by Luke Kelly, who walked away with all the plaudits (winning both 3 coaches points, and three referee points), Waverley managed to secure three meat pies (Karl Gaule, Stu Allen & Adam Short) over the one time leaders of the Barraclough Cup.

Two wins on the trot is just the medicine that Waverley needed, and may be enough to spur us up the competition table. Still we remain in 9th place, and 15 points out of the top four (and one game ahead), possibly leaving our run too late for a finals berth. Still anything is possible, and Waverley’s quest to keep us out of the relegation zone, may bring some unexpected surprises.

Upcoming Round

This weekend, Waverley’s men are back on the Frog and Toad, with some tough opposition and the women looking to secure their second win of the season over Penrith at home.

Grades 1 to 4 and Colts take on Divisional heavy weights at Turramurra (where they are doubly strong), and Fifth Grade taking on Mosman (TBC, sorry working from memory).

Stay tuned for more details.

Brrr it’s cold – Perfect for Ruggers this Weekend!

If you are like most people in this club, chances are you’ve come from a climate which is much colder than Sydney. In your first year here, it was probably the mildest winter you’ve ever had and you probably swam in the ocean every month (note the ocean temp is still a balmy 20.4 degrees). Then comes your second winter, and you freeze your bum off. If this is you, right now your pulling out your puffer jacket and complaining how cold it is. At least it’s no longer raining.

The good thing about this weather, is that it is perfect for rugby, with Waverley playing the washed out Round 7 match against Newport this Saturday. That is right, Waves is playing rugby this long weekend.

No one likes playing rugby on a long weekend, when there are other things to be done, but we need everyone on deck. One in. All in. So get your bum down to training tonight, and keep Saturday free. (Note, there are no Womens or Flying Fifths games this weekend).

The Palace 1st Grade

Fresh from their first win of the season and recent good form, Waverley has a great chance to knock off their more fancied opponents.

Having started the season on a high and leading the competition, Newport have suffered a form slump in recent weeks suffering three losses on the trot.

It being a long weekend, combined with Newport requiring a big trip, presents Waverley with a fantastic opportunity to record its second win and move us further out of the danger zone of Divisional Relegation.

The Palace 2nd Grade

In recent seasons, Waverley and Newport have been the form teams in the Stockdale Cup competition. This season both teams find themselves further away from the top of the comp than they would normally be, the round is set to be a tough encounter as both try to move onwards and upwards.

Just four points and one match is all that separates Waverley (3rd) and Newport (6th), so it is a pretty tough call who goes into the round favourite. However, for the victor it is either a chance to either take 1st place (in Waverley’s case, depending on other results), or for Newport to move into the top four (again depending on other results). A lot is at stake.

While Waves probably goes into the match as narrow favourites courtesy of the home game, the result is too hard to call. Certainly it is the match of the Round.

3rd Grade

After recording a narrow loss on the weekend, Waverley’s third grade will be turning their attention to securing their 2nd win of the season, an eminently possible feat given Newport has only secured one more win their Waverley (but are two games down).

A win will certainly give Waverley a chance to move out of last place, given perennial competition for the wooden spoon, St Ives are taking on 3rd place Kings.

Alexander Associates 4th Grade

The Round 7 replay in the Richardson Cup is the top of the table clash, with Waverley on 38 points and Newport on 25 points, but two games down. It will probably be Waverley’s toughest match, with Newport showing they can consistently put on big scores, taking four, four try bonus points in the season so far.

No doubt Waverley goes in favourites after winning 28 games on the trot. Will this be their first loss?

Cardsmart Consulting Colts

Courtesy of some new blood joining the club in recent weeks, Waverley’s form is on the improve in the Under 21 (U21) Robertson Cup.

Newport will be some tough oppo though. Sitting 3rd on the table, they have beaten the top two teams of the competition. However, they also lost to 8th place UNSW (who Waverley would have been ahead of if we hadn’t lost 4 competition points as result of the Oatley forfeit) last weekend. Waverley can’t take too much hope from that result, as it was bloody wet, and it may have been the wake up call Newport needed to return them to top form.

Ladies Day

Put it in your diary now. Ladies Day is set for 24 July 2010 (home game against Kings). More details to come.
