Bouncy Bouncy – Waverley Back in da Business

For three rounds this season, Waverley has been involved in clean sweeps in the men’s. Firstly on the wrong side of the ledger versus Blue Mountains, then Petersham. This week, Waverley turned its fortunes around as it returned home, so sneak in four wins past a very strong University of Western Sydney – Hawkesberry Campus (UWSH).

And what it day it was, thanks to the sunny, but cool conditions. Combined with Family Day, many members brought their respective tribes down to enjoy the free jumping castle and face painting, with even some big kids getting in on the action. Note the next Social Event is – Back to Waverley Day on 18th of June.

Waverley’s first clean sweep since 2007 started well with Waverley’s 4th Grade securing an 18 – 12 point win over the tourists. Never having looked like losing the result keeps Waverley in the finals hunt, currently sitting in 5th, just two points behind 3rd placed Hills.

In the Campbell Cup (3rd Grade), it was a bottom of the table clash, with both Waverley and UWSH winless, but with UWS ahead thanks to a healthy number of bonus points. The smashing victory (37 – 17) seems to have done wonders for Waverley’s confidence, with the boys sensing some chance of turning their fortunes around, and fighting for a finals berth. Sitting just 9 points outside of 3rd place (Balmain – this weekend’s oppo), there is plenty of time for Waves to pull out the “M People”…

2nd Grade, no matter the division, is ALWAYS the most closely fought grade in Subbies, and 2011 is no different. Round 6 saw Waverley notch up a 25 to 17 point win over 3rd placed UWSH, resulting in just 8 points separating 2nd to 8th, and with Waves (5th) just 5 points off 2nd placed Petersham. With Waverley due to take on 4th placed Balmain this weekend, here is a chance to move up a notch or two.

The real action and excitement in the day was in 1st Grade, with Waverley snatching a last minute converted try to secure the match, and the clean sweep. With the result swinging back and forth between Waverley and UWSH with some exciting football between the evenly matched sides, it is great credit to Waverley that it could stay focused, score the try and most importantly place one over the sticks (something for which Waverley is not renowned).

Most importantly, the win moved Waverley into 3rd, five points ahead of UWSH, and within three points of 2nd placed Petersham.

Unfortunately, the girls weren’t able to get in on the action, getting trounced (62 – 10) by a very strong Penrith side.

In the Divisional Standings, Waverley now sits forth, 56 points behind this weekends opponents, Balmain.

If you haven’t heard of Balmain, they’re that club just a stone’s throw the other side of the City, have cash to burn and use it to buy clapped out Wallabies and yet still can’t win…

In all seriousness, Balmain are last seasons Clarke Cup Champions, don’t take themselves too seriously and provide a good day out. So get down to training this week (from 7pm) on both Tuesday and Thursday, in order to allow us to put our best foot forward, and continue Balmain’s indifferent season. Make sure you stick around for beers and post match speeches at Dick’s…

OUTSTANDING SUBS NOW DUE

Have you paid your subs? If you haven’t, it’s time to cough up your dough. The club needs your cash! Finances are tight, especially with sponsorship being a bit light on this year.

Newport Ten’s Report

Saturday saw Waverley head out of the eastern suburbs for the first run out of the season at the annual Newport 10’s tournament.

First up after an extensive 2 minute warm up including a brief “what’s your name mate” session, Waverley faced Newport’s first team on their home turf. Despite going down 4-0, Waverley stuck at it and steadily improved as the game progressed.

An 1 ½ hour wait for the next game gave Waverley plenty of time to regroup, finally warm up properly and start discussing tactics.

Next up came Silver Bullets. Again, the result didn’t go our way eventually losing 4-1 but Waverley was much improved and after an inspired tactical substitution and a fortuitous penalty move from Andre, Billy crossed the line for a well deserved try.

In the final game the team faced Cabcon after another 1 ½ hour wait which did Waverley no favours. Despite everyone being tired and confidence being knocked after conceding an early try, Waverley continued to stick at it, building on the previous two games and with some great team work and effort we ended the first half down by two tries to one. We’d finally been rewarded with a well deserved try following some determined team play when Chris crossed the line late in the first half. In the second half with confidence on the up and the team playing undoubtedly their best rugby of the day, Waverley equalised when Sam crossed the line – was a surprise win on the cards?

Unfortunately not… Waverley was unable to hold on to the lead after the ball which appeared to have crossed the dead ball line bizarrely rolled back in to play. We eventually lost 3-2 but it was a great effort all around.

A big well done to all of the boys and a good day was had by all!

Photos from the day can be found on our Flickr page.

Match Review – Women Vs Drummoyne

Last Saturday the Waverley Women’s rugby team defeated the Drummoyne Women’s rugby team in 80 minutes of what can only be called nail-biting rugby. The final score was 27-19. Both sides showed great promise in the opening minutes of the game, in both attack and defence. After approximately 20 minutes of back and forth the Waverley girls finally crossed the line scoring the first try of the match. Waverley went over twice more before Drummoyne got on the board with a penalty try awarded to them for some unfair play by Waverley. As the try was directly under the posts the Drummoyne player had no trouble converting the try, something Waverley had been unable to do thus far. Leaving the score at 15-7.

As the half time whistle blew both teams were relieved for the break. Although Waverley was still in the lead they went into the second half determined to put some more points on the board. One player in particular, who had scored their first try for the club in the first half and was hungry to repeat it. This was not meant to be, although Waverley did score twice more in the second half, making one conversion. Drummoyne also entered the second half with points on their mind, which translated into one converted try and one unconverted try.

Throughout the match both sides demonstrated impressive backline movement, gaining both sides extensive ground and often try’s. Drummoyne had impressive lineout style, that when enacted quickly enabled them to get the jump on the opposition. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for their scrum work. Although the Drummoyne side was bigger and looked to have all the advantage, the Waverley pack drove them back and won the ball time and time again.

All in all, it was a great day for rugby and a great game of rugby played by both sides.

Waverley Drifts Closer to the Danger Zone

After a largely disappointing weekend where only the Flying Fifths and 4th Grade won, Waverley is sitting perilously close to the danger zone of relegation down to Division Three.

Just 41 points is all that separates Waverley from last place Hornsby, with a minimum 196 points (and a maximum 245 points) up for grabs Waves needs to ramp things up in all grades in coming weeks, otherwise it is a down we go. It’s increasingly looking likely that Waverley’s fate will be decided in the final round, but with Waverley travelling away to Hornsby, we’d be better off focusing on the coming weeks, and securing as many points as possible.

Up coming rounds see Waverley take on Kings (home), Newport (away), Oatley (home) and then away to Hornsby in the final round.

There is plenty of opportunity for wins in these games, especially in the higher grades where we really need to be securing points.

Late Tries Seals Waverley’s Fate

Waverley hit the Frog and Toad and headed North, way North to visit fellow Blue and Gold club, St Ives. The Flying Fifths also went North to Macquarie Uni, and the Women West to Merrylands.

At the end of the day, Waverley walked away with wins in 4th Grade and Colts, and a draw in 3rd Grade. Unfortunately this meant Waverley lost 1st and 2nd Grade, Flying Fifths and Women.

The result matrix was as follows:

Team Result Score
The Palace
1st Grade
Lost to St Ives 27 – 14
The Palace
2nd Grade
Lost to St Ives 45 – 15
3rd Grade Drew with St Ives 12 – 12
Alexander Associates
4th Grade
Won V St Ives 32 – 0
Cardsmart Consulting
Colts
Won V St Ives 19 – 7
JCB Communcations
Aquilla Plumbing
Colts
Lost to Mac Uni 14 – 0
NSW Farmers Women Lost to Merrylands? ???

While not a good result by any means, especially as it makes Waverley’s 2nd Grade finals aspirations very tough, there were some good signs, particularly in 1st Grade, where Waverley had the chance to take the points with 10 minutes to go, only to suffer a late flurry of tries to lose the match.

Flatliners… Waverley Goes to the Movies

Ok, we didn’t go to the movies, but Waverley’s weekend results certainly resembled that of a dramatic movie. You know the drill, the lead actor is being rushed into hospital with a mortal wound. Still alive, they are whacked on the EKG machine, to see a couple of beeps, only to flatline shortly afterwards.

The beeps of life for Waverley were the opening games, with Colts and 4th Grade both recording wins against Briars, only to be followed by looses in 5th Grade, Women, 3rd Grade, 2nd Grade & 1st Grade. Flatline…

The results from the weekend were as follows:

Grade Result Position
The Palace
1st Grade
Lost 12- 41 9th
The Palace
2nd Grade
Lost 21 – 24 5th
3rd Grade Lost 10 – 30 10th
Alexander Associates
4th Grade
Won 45 – 0 1st
Cardsmart Consulting
Colts
Won 17 – 5 8th
JCB Communications &
Aquilla Plumbing
Flying Fifths
Lost 17 – 8 5th
NSW Farmers
Women
Lost 6th

The results were largely to form, but were particularly disappointing for JCB Plumbing & Aquilla Plumbing Flying Fifths and The Palace 2nd Grade, as both matches were critical to their Premiership hopes. The results leave Flying Fifths with a difficult task of catching Colleagues, especially if the two sides don’t meet again. Waverley sits 14 points off 1st place in 5th place in the Halligan Cup (remember the Halligan structure is 1st past the post). Similarly 2nd Grade are now 7 points (and one game ahead) out side of the top four, and have some work to do in coming weeks.

You can discuss the weekends results on the forum. Click here.

Overall it was a frustrating day for the club, and not just because of the results. With 1mm of rain since Wednesday, Council decided that that was far too much rain and closed the main oval. On inspection the ground was perfect, especially when combined with the sunny skies and windy conditions drying what little moisture was on the pitch.

The weekend marks two weeks on the road for the rest of the club, starting with a short hop to UNSW for the men (including the Flying Fifths) and at home for the women. The men back up the weekend with a longer road trip to St Ives, which are then followed by two weeks at home (Hunters Hill and Kings (including Ladies Day)) and then a weekend off.

Waverley Ski Weekend

On the Wet Weather Weekend scheduled for July 31, Andy Collingridge is organising the 4th Annual Waverley Ski Trip. Everyone is invited, but places (as organised by Andy), are strictly limited. That said, if you miss out on one of the select 12 positions, please feel free to organise your own accommodation and transport. Just liaise with Andy about ways to catch up. Read all about the ski weekend here, or post some questions on the forum here.

Ladies Day

Put it in your diaries, Ladies Day is set for July 24th. Full details will be posted soon, but organise your female friends and family to come down for the day.

Giddy Up! 4 out of 5!

Waverley Rugby Club has enjoyed its best outing of 2010 winning an impressive four out of five games against Newport, on a perfect winters day in Sydney.

After weeks of crappy weather rained off Waverley’s Round 7 – May 22nd clash, Waverley made the most of its June Long Weekend encounter against fellow seaside club Newport, with The Palace 2nd Grade the only team to go down.

And what a great day it was. Perfect sunny skies, but with cool temps, made it the perfect way to make up for a missing out on a weekend of rugby, and even better was the impressive display by all teams to take it up to our higher ranked opponents.

The successful round marginally increases our margin over last placed Hornsby, but only marginally because Hornsby also had a successful weekend too, with an upset win over finals contenders Kings Old Boys in the Barraclough Cup. Maybe this is a good sign for Waverley, that it can build on it’s two wins on the trot in 1st Grade, to challenge those teams higher up the ladder.

Props Wanted

Read today’s other news article, Want to be a Waverley Prop Star. Waves is in desperate need of some front row blood, so if you’re aware of any potentials, or want to have a go yourself, let us know.

Match Reviews

Reading through the preview from last week (brr it’s cold…), the predictions were largely (and thankfully) correct.

For Waverley, the round represents the half way point of the Home and Away, and is a good chance to see where we are sitting and what finals hopes we may have. Unfortunately four other clubs are still one round behind and with Hunters Hill two rounds behind, thus making real comparisons difficult.

But we’ll try!

Cardsmart Consulting Colts

Waverley walked out of the day with a thrilling 12 to 11 point win over (then) 3rd placed Newport. As the only team to have beaten 1st place Barkers Old Boys, this is a great result for Waverley, and vindicates a lot of effort put into the squad in recent weeks.

Unfortunately, the margin should have been higher, with Waverley about to secure another try when the ref decided that advantage had been played, so called Waverley back to a penalty.

I know, Waves may have fouled in the interim period, but don’t let the facts get in the way of a good story.

Unfortunately I can’t tell you who the try scorers were, as the team sheet shows Michael Hatten, Steve Fairburn and Matt Hamilton all scoring tries, despite Waverley only securing 12 points.

The result leaves Waverley in 9th place (as opposed to the 14 we should have been on had we not forfeited against Oatley), making the task of qualifying for the finals very difficult.

With Waverley ~14 points off the top four (but one game ahead), it is still theoretically possible for Waverley to make it through to the finals, but it will be a massive ask, with Waverley needing to win virtually every game here in.

Alexander Associates 4th Grade

In a top of the table clash Waverley continued it’s unbeaten run, and firmly entrenches itself in top position.

The next four weeks sees Waverley play the balance of the top six teams. If past performance is an indicator Waverley is unlikely to be knocked off it’s perch.

Waverley remains odds on favourites for back to back Premierships

Final score 26-0, with tries to Tainui Wynyard, Anthony Collett and Rob Pryor.

3rd Grade

Storming into its 2nd win of the season in the Blunt Cup, Waverley sits on equal points with Hunters Hill and St Ives (two and one games down respectively), with a great chance to move itself out of 10th place in coming weeks.

Like Colts before them, Waverley scraped through with a narrow one point (20 – 19) win over Newport, with tries to Steve Hearn (2), Mark Lee, and Bobby Hopper (WTF, three out of the four tries came from props, no doubt sea gulling).

It was an important win for 3rd Grade, because despite sitting in last place, they have a very realistic chance of making the finals, being just 13 points (and same number of games) as 3rd placed Barkers Old Boys.

With nine rounds to go, Waverley needs to continue its recent good form, and it will be in a shot of making the finals. The next few weeks will be critical for Waverley’s success.

The Palace 2nd Grade

Last week we tipped this as the match of the round, with two top billing sides battling for a position in the top four. Unfortunately for Waverley, they went down 20 points to 12, plus missed out on an all important bonus point.

In the end, this dropped Waverley out of 2nd place, down to 6th place, which just shows you how competitive the Stockdale Cup is again this season, with just seven points separating the top 7 teams.

While Waverley remains in a strong position to secure a finals berth, the next few weeks sees Waverley take on the top four sides. Waverley needs to use these matches to build for a possible premiership, plus to keep traction in the Divisional Championship (2nd Grade are still carrying the rest of the club in this regards).

Both tries to rampaging No. 8, Hepa Gillies.

The Palace 1st Grade

Last week Waverley recorded its first win of the season. This week, Waverley secured its second win with 19 – 14 point win. Woot!

Lead by Luke Kelly, who walked away with all the plaudits (winning both 3 coaches points, and three referee points), Waverley managed to secure three meat pies (Karl Gaule, Stu Allen & Adam Short) over the one time leaders of the Barraclough Cup.

Two wins on the trot is just the medicine that Waverley needed, and may be enough to spur us up the competition table. Still we remain in 9th place, and 15 points out of the top four (and one game ahead), possibly leaving our run too late for a finals berth. Still anything is possible, and Waverley’s quest to keep us out of the relegation zone, may bring some unexpected surprises.

Upcoming Round

This weekend, Waverley’s men are back on the Frog and Toad, with some tough opposition and the women looking to secure their second win of the season over Penrith at home.

Grades 1 to 4 and Colts take on Divisional heavy weights at Turramurra (where they are doubly strong), and Fifth Grade taking on Mosman (TBC, sorry working from memory).

Stay tuned for more details.
