Saturday Two Big Games

While most of you will finally be happy to nurse hangovers on Saturday, safe in the knowledge that you won’t need to be strapping up, Waverley Rugby Club still has two teams in action this weekend.

First up, Waverley’s Alexander Associates 4th Grade will be playing in the Major Semi Final against Newport. The match review is pretty simple. Waverley is expected to win. Being largely untroubled all year, playing close to home, and looking to record their 39th straight win, all point to Waves walking in a favourites.

Still stranger things have happened in finals…

Details are:

Waverley Vs Newport
11.20am Kick off
Dave Phillips Playing Fields
Cnr Banks & Gwea Ave
Daceyville (ie UNSW home ground)

Waverley’s other game, is a match against Sydney’s confused (do I barrack for NSW, or QLD?) Inner West team, Petersham. The round was meant to decide who was going to finish in the top three, but courtesy of 3 all a mid week draw between the two sides last week, Waves is locked out of the top four, and sits comfortably in 5th place.

It being the last round of the season for the two clubs, no doubt it will be a great match, especially as it will be playing on Waverley #1. Rumour has it, there will be a pub crawl afterwards if you want to join them.

Waverley Goes Down in a Thriller

It what proved to be a fantastic game, Waverley’s The Palace 1st grade, went down in a thrilling 34 – 33 point loss to Kings Old Boys, who currently sit 3rd in the Barraclough Cup.

Showing signs of what could have been, it was a fantastic result (given it was a loss) for Waverley, and shows that there is still some chance to restore some pride in the final three rounds. With the final three games against Newport , Oatley and Hornsby, which round out the bottom four sides along with Waverley, Waves has a chance to finish the season on a high, if only it can muster the numbers on some treks away to Newport and Hornsby.

Game Details 24/07 – Quick Update

Yes, tomorrow’s games are definitely on!

Tomorrow sees all men’s teams play at home (subject to weather that is), and the women away to Sydney Uni.

For the men, they are chasing points in every grade as we need as many Divisional Championship Points to stay in Div 2 in 2011, and no one wants to start our 40th Anniversary down a Division. The oppo for them is Kings Old Boys, and Colleagues in Halligan.

Kings sit 3rd on the competition table and will be tough oppo. Apparently they are targetting an upset win in 4th Grade, so Waves Alexander Associates boys better be on the look out.

Kings are always tough oppo, tend to pick up steam towards the end of the season, so watch up.

Wet Weather

As a result of the forecast, there may be some last minute changes to the matches, so stay tuned to the website first thing tomorrow morning.

Flying Fifths will be the ones that are effected.

In the event of Oval #1 being closed, we’ll be bumping Grades 1 to 4 and Colts on to the back oval, and the Flying Fifths will be bumped to Colleagues at Rose Bay.

Kick off times are as follows:

10.30am – Colts
12.00pm – 4th Grade
12.00pm – 5th Grade (#2 Oval)
12.55pm – 3rd Grade
2.00pm – 2nd Grade
3.15pm – 1st Grade

Post Match Speeches – Wallabies vs Boks

Post match speeches will again be held at The Palace. With the Wallabies playing the Springboks on Saturday night, make sure you stick around to watch the game.

Ladies Day – Now August 14

Because of the wet weather, we’ve decided to bump Ladies Day to the last home game on August 14.

Flying Fifths Kick Off Time 12pm

Confirming that the Flying Fifths are kicking off against Colleagues @ 12pm at Woollahra Oval #3.

Sorry for the late notice guys. Woollahra Council only just confirmed.

Good Luck All!

Training Moves to Main Oval

From Tuesday night (for the remainder of the season), we are back on the main oval for training. Thank God

With cricket finally done and dusted, we go back to the beautiful soft green grass of Waverley Oval #1.

That’s right, meet at Waverley Oval #1 (behind the white picket fence on the corner of Bondi Rd and Park Pde, Bondi), for a great night of rugby training. Get there at 6.45pm sharp.

Remember, bring your mouth guard (or gumshoe for the POME’s), boots, rugby shorts, and please wear a rugby jumper too.

Training is on both Tuesday and Thursday night this week.

We’ll then give you a weekend off to celebrate Easter, before our final week of pre-season training.

Remember, Round 1 is at home. The men are playing BOBs and Convicts, and women’s oppo is still TBA.

We’ll be hosting a massive eight matches. That’s right, two Halligan games, in addition to Grades 1 to 4, Colts and Women’s.

Given a Round 1 home match is when we have more bods than we can poke a stick at, this will ensure that EVERYONE will get good game time. Some people may have to back up for two games, but with the lower grades only being 25mins this shouldn’t be too much of a problem (with all that pre-season training you’ve been doing).

More information will be provided leading up to the game.

Round 1 – Post Match Function

One of the biggest nights of the year, is the first home games. So make sure you keep the night free and head back to Waverley Bowling Club.

It will be a pretty casual night, and will be focusing on just getting to know you mates (and of course looking for a win in the boat race).

Training – Moving Forward

With the first trials done and dusted, pre-season training is about to step up a gear.

As of tonight, training will focus more on skills and moving towards getting squads selected ahead of the next trial (versus Oatley on March 20th) where games will be played on a grade by grade basis.

Fitness sessions will now be run directly by the coaches – a massive thanks to Juergen “I love pain” Empacher for guiding us to this point. There is now no need to bring $5 to training.

If you haven’t made it down yet, don’t fret, there is still plenty of chance to impress and secure yourself a spot in the grades. Coaches will be looking at all remaining trial matches (Balmain on the 27th in addition to the Oatley trial on the 20th) and how people are going in training.

The aim of all this is to ensure that we put the best team on the park in every grade in the Round 1 clash against BOBs on April 10th. Once the season is underway, everyone will still get a chance to push to play up the grades, with the coaches playing close attention to the performances in other grades.

Social Rugby

Those of you who would prefer just to focus on the social side of the game, Waverley aims to ensure that we give everyone good game time, week in, week out. We do this by fielding teams in the Halligan Cup.

This also allows us to get a look at those who join us midway through the season, and get them up into the grades where possible.

The great news for 2010 is that there are a few more clubs (in Div 2) who are likely to be fielding Halligan Cup teams, meaning that the Fifth Platoon / Flying Fifths (or whatever the boys want to be called this year), will be playing with the rest of the Club on a more regular basis.

The way things are shaping up at the moment, the boys should be playing ~4 of the first 5 games with the rest of the Club.

Even if you are thinking you only want to play Halligan, still aim to head down for trials, as they are a great chance to get back into thick of things, and start the 2010 with a bang.

Note: the following clubs are likely to be fielding Halligan sides this season: Briars, Hunters Hill, Kings, UNSW, and obviously Waverley.
