Trial 2 – Waverley Rugby Vs Maccabi & Sydney Convicts & Other News

The season is hotting up, with Trial #2 this weekend, against local Eastern Suburbs rivals Maccabi and Sydney Convicts.

Between the three Clubs, this is a home trial match (so no excuses for not getting down), on the white cliffs of Dover (Heights).

Rodney Reserve is one of the most picturesque grounds in Sydney, over looking the Tasman Sea. The last few years, Waverley Rugby has always tried to host a pre-season trial match up there when we can, so it is great to be heading back once again. Full details below:

Training is ON Tonight – Bondi Beach

For this weekends trial we are picking squads for each of the designated matches. This all happens at TONIGHT’s training.

For those of you new to Sydney, and thinking that just because these teams play in a lower division, they’ll be a walk over, they should not to be taken lightly as they are two very well drilled and physical outfits.

Between this and next week, there are only two trials left before the season starts on April 14th. (Note there is a week off for Easter in between).

2012 Draw Finalised

Round 1 of the 2012 Div 3 Subbies Rugby Season, will be a home game against fellow Div 3 neophites, Brothers.

While the new Grand Stand is complete, we aren’t 100% certain yet that we’ll be 100% bumped into the new facility, as Council is still undergoing final certification. Word is, we’ll at least have access to the Change Rooms. We’ll keep you updated on that. Either way, it is going to be HUGE. Lock it in your diary now.

Here is the summary:

Rd 1 – Apr 14 – Home Vs Brothers

Finals (note it is a five team finals comp)

Qualification Finals – Aug 25 (2 Vs 3, and 4 Vs 5)
Semi Finals – Sep 1
Preliminary Final – Sep 8
Grand Final – Sep 15

As you can see, this is a pretty favourable draw for the Club. Home games the first and last rounds, with the bigger road trips done and dusted early in the piece.

You may be asking why a five team finals comp? Look closely at the teams for 2012. That is a 12 team competition, courtesy of Subbies not being able to get Division 4 up and running… It should make for an interesting season.

1st Win in Eight Rounds

Waverley’s The Palace 1st Grade has breathed a massive sigh of relief after securing its first win of the 2010 campaign, narrowly beaten fellow cellar dwellers, Hornsby, 23 points to 21 in an otherwise disrupted Round 9 clash.

After three weeks of persistent rain, Waverley was one of the few clubs to get on the pitch, with over 90% of all Subbies fixtures cancelled courtesy of Friday’s bucketing. Surprisingly it turned out to be a fantastic day, with Oval #2 holding up very well, allowing some fantastic rugby to be played.

On Friday we said that this was a critical round for Waverley, if it was to avoid relegation to Division Three in 2011, and what a weekend it was, with all teams putting in some fantastic efforts to keep our Div Two aspirations very much alive.

In the end, Waves walked away with wins in 1st Grade, 2nd Grade, 4th Grade and 5th Grade, a narrow loss in 3rd Grade, and a largely competitive match in Colts despite the loop sided score line.

This boosted Waverley’s lead over Hornsby in the Divisional Table to 606 points versus 359 points respectively. It also puts us within a few hundred points of some of the other clubs, and thus a chance to move up out of 9th in coming weeks.

For this to occur, Waverley needs to take the momentum gained in 1st Grade, and keep securing wins, especially over clubs like Briars, St Ives, UNSW and especially Newport this weekend.

Matches on This Weekend

Before we get stuck into the (brief) match reviews, you are reminded we are playing the washed out Round 7 clash against Newport this Saturday.

Thankfully the weather forecast looks good, meaning a Training will definitely be on Thursday, and a good chance we’ll be on Tuesday as well, with Saturday meant to be fine and sunny.

So make sure you get down to training (especially Thursday), so Waves can plot it’s course back up the competition tables.

Match Reviews

The Palace 1st Grade

In a man of the match performance, from both the referee and the Club, No. 6 Greg Quaid inspired Waverley’s The Palace 1st Grade to a hard fought and narrow first win over last placed Hornsby.

In recent weeks, especially last week against Oatley, Waverley has shown it has the ability to mix it up with the other clubs, if only it could get over its hurry to secure its first win of the season. Waves has now taken the medicine needed and will be looking to build in future weeks.

This weekends opponents, Newport, sitting in 7th place with 4 wins, is the perfect opportunity, especially with Waves playing at home.

Final Score: Waverley 23. Hornsby 21

Tries to Patrick Burke-Marcou, Josh Lose, & Kristian Parata

The Palace 2nd Grade

A bonus point 38 to 7 point win moves Waverley’s The Palace 2nd Grade to third in the Stockdale Cup, just three points behind 1st place St Ives.

Five tries were split between Stu McKay (2), Alex Laing, Tets Sakaguchi, & Jerome Wood, with four converted by Benny Farrow, in what was a convincing display by Waverley.

Coach Deon Smith would be pleased with Waverley’s form in recent weeks, with Waverley shaping up to be real finals contenders. Still it will be tough going for the Club, with six teams just separated by 7 points (and some clubs 1 game down courtesy of recent wet weather).

With Waves playing most of these over the coming rounds, Waverley must take itself very seriously if it does want to be number one in September.

3rd Grade

Waverley’s narrow 10 – 8 point loss to 5th place Hornsby in the Blunt Cup, shows that Waves is on the improve, and should be looking to pick up some more wins in coming weeks.

The 3rd Grade comp is fairly easily spread, and there is some chance, admittingly remote, for Waverley to move from it’s 10th place and secure an improbable finals berth. Rumour has it, that Coaches Collingridge and Wong are keeping a book on the matter.

Try to Kenny “Almost English” Brown.

Alexander Associates 4th Grade

Eight straight wins and 6 bonus points says it all really… Waverley having secured a 39 to 7 point win over 8th place Hornsby.

The most notable story from the day, was Waverley’s shocker with the boot, with Waverley’s ever reliable Nick Eder not able to master the blustery conditions. It wasn’t until Benny Farrow was brought on late in the match did Waverley finally convert two of its seven tries.

Final Score: Waverley 39 to Hornsby 7.

Tries to: Michael West (2), Anthony Collett, Jake Havebond, Shaun Simpson, Ben Farrow, and Matt Holani.

Cardsmart Colts

It was a disappointing round for Waverley’s Colts. After bouncing back from a forfeit the week before, Waverley put in a commendable effort to hold Hornsby in the tricky conditions.

Waves were looking good just prior to the break, only being two tries down, playing into a strong head wind. Unfortunately a temporary lapse saw Hornsby score two more tries in quick succession just before the half time whistle.

Unfortunately Waverley wasn’t able to recover after the break, eventually going down 38 points to nil.

You can check out the Photo Blog of the Colts game here.

JCB Communications and Aquila Plumbing Flying Fifths

Since its re-establishment in 2008, Waverley’s Flying Fifths have gone from strength to strength and remain one of the most desirable teams in the club to play for. Saturday was no different, with massive numbers turning out to play, which given the 9.30am kick-off was all the more remarkable.

Saturday also saw Waverley secure a great 22 to 5 point win over Convicts “#2”. Why the apostrophes? Well, courtesy of nearly every other game in Sydney being washed out, Waverley actually played a combo of both Convicts #2 (first half) and Convicts #1 in the 2nd half. Given Convicts #1 are currently undefeated, it was an impressive display by the boys.

Waverley’s Flying Fifths remain 3rd, 12 points off first placed Convicts #1. With Convicts about to head off O/S to play the Bingham Cup, there is a good chance of Waverley battling it out for 1st place against Colleagues in coming weeks.

NSW Farmers Women

Unfortunately the girls game got canned, so no match review.

Get Down to Training

Fingers crossed that the main oval dries out in enough time to get us training again on Tuesday.

Stay tuned for updates, but especially make sure you are there Thursday night.

New Front Page Layout

Let us know your thoughts on the new front page layout. Post a comment below.

Clicky Click… We’re on tomorrow

Clicky Click? WTF? Well that pretty much sums up training & games the last few weeks. With all the beautiful weather we’ve been having, heaps of emails, SMS, website updates, phone calls etc have been flying around the ether to make sure everyone knows what’s going on.

With rain currently pouring down, today looks like it will be no different.

Here’s the sitch…

All Men’s Games are On

The main oval swimming pool is currently closed and the chance of it opening ahead of tomorrows games are precisely 0.000001532%. That’s right, sweet %&#* all.

So we’ve moved ALL men’s games to the number two pitch, with all the action kicking off at a spritely 9.30am, and going through until 5pm (just another day at the office eh?).

Women’s Game

No news yet on the women’s game, but if this weather holds up it looks like the back up option will also be rained off, so stay in touch with Karin. Further updates will be posted here once known.

Round Review

After a two week hiatus (well three weeks since they played their last game), the JCB Communications / Aquila Plumbing Flying Fifths are kicking off all the action, at a choice time of 9.30am.

Up against Colleagues Convicts #2, Waverley goes into the match favourites. The only risk to the outcome is that the Convicts #1 team might get rained off resulting in a last minute change of opposition. With the Convicts sides about to jet off overseas for the Bingham Cup, the game could be tougher than expected.

Following through at the usual times the rest of the grades face an important test. Currently sitting 9th in the Divisional table, Waverley faces 10th place Hornsby. The winner of the Round will take the momentum have the best chance of staying in Div Two in 2011. The loser… Need I say more?

For those of you wanting to know, the Divisional Table is calculated by multiplying the total competition points secured by a team by the following factors:

1st Grade – x22
2nd Grade – x12
3rd Grade – x6
Colts – x6
4th Grade – x3

Currently Waverley has secured 437 Championship Points. The combinations from each grade are made up as follows:

1st Grade – 2 x 22 = 44
2nd Grade – 19 x 12 = 228
3rd Grade – 5 x 6 = 30
Colts – 6 x 6 = 36*
4th Grade – 33 x 3 = 99

* Colts had 4 competition points and 24 Championship points removed as a result of forfeiting to Oatley.

As you can see, Waverley’s lack of wins in first grade is the thing that is keeping us down the table with 2nd Grades success keeping us in the mix, supported by 4th Grade.

What’s the moral of the story? Put simply never give up. With Championship points awarded on bonus points as well as grade wins. Remember bonus points are secured for four or more tries, or losing by less than 7 points.

Back to reality…

The toughest games for Waverley will be in Colts, 3rd Grade and 1st Grade.

For The Palace 1st Grade, both clubs will be looking for their first win of the season, with Waverley in 9th, just one bonus point ahead, and Hornsby in 10th. The last time Waverley played Hornsby at home (in similar conditions to this weekend), Waverley thumped Hornsby. But things are different. Then Waverley was fighting for a chance at finals, now Waverley is fighting to avoid relegation.

Given the weather conditions and that Waverley is playing at home, you’d think Waves would have the edge, but you never know.

Waverley’s 3rd Grade only sit 9 points behind Hornsby, presenting the boys with a great opportunity to secure their second win of the year. For Hornsby, they will be looking to rebuild and defend their 2009 competition title.

After a disastrous trip to away to Oatley which saw Waverley’s Cardsmart Colts forfeit because of a lack of numbers (wet weather / last minute changes / lost players the reasons), Waverley is looking to regroup, and move back up the table. Courtesy of losing points as a result of the forfeit, Waverley title’s hopes have taken a blow. That said the boys still have the talent to secure a potential finals berth, with that challenge starting this week.

Waverley’s two finals hopes remain The Palace 2nd Grade (just three points and one game off 4th place) and Alexander Associates 4th Grade (sitting pretty at the top of the table).

In the Stockdale Cup, Hornsby sit bottom of the table, presenting Waverley a ripe opportunity to pluck a win, and a much needed bonus point, if Waverley can master the tricky conditions.

In the Richardson Cup, Waverley is well clear, and remain favourites to rack up their 8th win of the season.

Get Down to Waverley Oval Early

With the lack of training in recent weeks, all players are requested to get to the ground early (ie well before the time you think you’re playing). This will enable Waves to cover any unexpected holes, and give us plenty of time to warm up and discuss tactics.

Kick off times are as follows:

9.30am – 5th Grade
10.45am – Colts
12.00pm – 4th Grade
12.55pm – 3rd Grade
2.00pm – 2nd Grade
3.15pm – 1st Grade

Please try and stick around for as long as possible. Yes I know it will be wet and cold, but your support will be critical to Waves success on the field.

Head to the Palace

Don’t forget to head to the Palace for Post Match Speeches.

Also thanks to all those that turned up to the Palace last night. It was a great night.

2009 NSWSRU Player Survey

The short of it is, the season will remain at 18 rounds, but there will be a guaranteed bye weekend from 2012 (the RWC gets in the way of doing it in 2011).

In perfect autumn weather, Waverley’s 2010 rugby season has kicked off, with Waverley taking on some quality opposition in Round One. While Saturday was always going to be a massive ask for Waverley, the season is still young and there is plenty of opportunity for us to be serious contenders this season.

2010 Here We Come – Round 1 Saturday

In just two days the 2010 Subbies Rugby Season is officially under-way, and what a cracker of a weekend, and indeed season, it will be. Better yet, we start the season at home with a massive eight games of rugby to be played.

What can you expect? Put simply a bloody good time. At Waverley, the rugby is darn important, but so is what happens off the field.
