For those of you who haven’t made it down to training yet and want to know what’s happening or are just interested in why we’re doing what we’re doing; read on!
Just to give you some idea of the idea behind last night’s training. As it is pre-season, we have a focus on fitness and building core skills. Last night we had our warm up (touch and then 2 handed touch) and core strengthening and stretching exercises to finish off.
For the main part of training we had:
- A circuit of 6 stations, with 3 stations focussing on fitness and the other 3 on building some core skills. The stations were intermingled so that it went fitness, core skills, fitness, core skills, fitness, core skills. Each station lasting for about 8 mins with a 2 min change over. The 2 mins allowed for some recovery and being able to explain the next drill.
Fitness stations were:
o Agility – stepping and swerving through the poles. This also developed core skills of stepping while holding the ball out in front and swerving while changing the position of ball to fend off players.
o Shuttle run with the up/down
o Continuous sprint/jog around the quarter with the length of sprints increasing throughout the set.
Core skill stations were:
o Handling – various handling exercises (also included catch and pass)
o Running lines – attacking lines beating lower number of defenders (also included catch and pass)
o Ruck drill – included ball placement, clearing out etc
As the season proper approaches we’ll start focussing more on unit and team skills (although we have done some of this in the basic prep work we did for our first trial).
So get down to Waves and see what’s happening.
