Match Review – Women Vs Drummoyne

Last Saturday the Waverley Women’s rugby team defeated the Drummoyne Women’s rugby team in 80 minutes of what can only be called nail-biting rugby. The final score was 27-19. Both sides showed great promise in the opening minutes of the game, in both attack and defence. After approximately 20 minutes of back and forth the Waverley girls finally crossed the line scoring the first try of the match. Waverley went over twice more before Drummoyne got on the board with a penalty try awarded to them for some unfair play by Waverley. As the try was directly under the posts the Drummoyne player had no trouble converting the try, something Waverley had been unable to do thus far. Leaving the score at 15-7.

As the half time whistle blew both teams were relieved for the break. Although Waverley was still in the lead they went into the second half determined to put some more points on the board. One player in particular, who had scored their first try for the club in the first half and was hungry to repeat it. This was not meant to be, although Waverley did score twice more in the second half, making one conversion. Drummoyne also entered the second half with points on their mind, which translated into one converted try and one unconverted try.

Throughout the match both sides demonstrated impressive backline movement, gaining both sides extensive ground and often try’s. Drummoyne had impressive lineout style, that when enacted quickly enabled them to get the jump on the opposition. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for their scrum work. Although the Drummoyne side was bigger and looked to have all the advantage, the Waverley pack drove them back and won the ball time and time again.

All in all, it was a great day for rugby and a great game of rugby played by both sides.
