Congratulations also to Spud, Jayne and Claire!

Further to the earlier article, I am pleased to announce that Nik “Spud” Buchanan and Jayne Morris have also been selected for the Sydney team this Sunday.
Spud has been a stalwart of the Waverley women’s front row since 2007 and I’m sure she’ll do an awesome job propping up the Sydney scrum.
Jayne joined the club a couple of years ago and has played virtually everywhere in the forwards, but is most comfortable at 2nd row.
We wish both girls the best of luck.
Another Waverley prop, Claire “Irish” Blacklaw, has been selected as a “shadow”, that is if one of the props gets hurt playing on Saturday, Irish will get a late call-up. Wouldn’t wish an injury on anybody, but if she does get the call, best of luck to her too!

Nelly and Norway selected for Sydney Rep team

Congratulations to Nelly Green and Rebecca “Norway” Froen who have been selected to play for the Sydney Representative team when it plays against a visiting British Army team this Sunday.

Nelly joined Waverley at the beginning of 2011 and had a great first season with us. She was awarded “Best back – Best & Fairest” and “Players Player” for the year.

Nelly has already played for Sydney 7s team in competitions last November and this March.

Norway is one of the many foreign students that have joined Waverley for a limited period of time. We love having them, but hate when they have to leave! Luckily we have Norway for the whole of this season.

Norway has never played 15s rugby before (only 7s and a little 10s), so it’s very impressive how she has settled into the different style of game.

We wish these girls the best of luck on Sunday, and also a big thank-you as they are not resting up on Saturday in preparation, but will be part of our team playing Warringah on Saturday afternoon.

We’d also like to recognise the efforts of the many other girls who put themselves forward for selection for the rep team and attended the three open training sessions on the last three Wednesday evenings (without bailing out on Tuesday/Thursday Waverley training). Although these girls didn’t make the team, they have improved their rugby which will benefit all at Waverley.

Note that at time of press the forwards for Sunday’s game have not been announced. We will update if any more Waverley girls get the call-up.

The game is being played at 10.30am, Sunday 20th March, David Phillips Sports field on Banks Ave in Daceyville. Post-match get together at the Coogee Bay Hotel.

Mens Rugby – 3 Clean Sweeps and rolling…

The Mens teams have had some remarkable results over the past few weeks with 12/12 wins over the past 3 rounds, which have seen us jump from 8th to 3rd in the club championship in the space of 3 weeks.

It all started away at Hornsby 3 weeks ago when we faced what seemed to be a club in crisis with Waverley recording heavy wins all round. Hawkesbury Valley travelled to Waverley Oval the following week and came up against a confident and bullish Waverley outfit in the mood to cause some damage which resulted in a 44-7 hiding in 1st grade. Last weekend Macquarie Uni travelled to Waverley Oval and once more we smahed them with another 4-0 clean sweep. GREAT STUFF BOYS!!!

Having already played the best 2 teams in the comp (Brothers – Round 1 & Blue Mountains -Round 2) we should be expecting to go away this weekend and get a result at Epping. It won’t be handed to us on a plate and we’ll have to fight for it but we have the quality and the committment to go over there and dominate – we just need to put in the effort this week!

We need all hands on decks to get eveyone to training this week to make it happen on Saturday.

Tiv, Beaver, Pete and Chalky will be there Tuesday & Thursday putting the effort in – lets make them proud and put the effort in this week so that we go into the bye weekend with another 4 wins under our belt and pushing for a top 2 position.

Take it! It’s yours if you want it bad enough.

Photo Blog – Round 1 2012 – Waverley Rugby Vs Brothers

1st Grade’s 2012 Season got off to a tough start, coming up against last years Div 4 Champions, Brothers.

In the end, Waverley walked away on the wrong side of 45 – 8 result, which isn’t a fun way to start the season. That will be turned around soon…

Still, it was great to be back on Waverley Oval, pity that we just couldn’t get access to the new Pavilion.

More photos are up on Flickr. Check em out.

2012 Mens Season Starts Here!

After months of pre-season training in various locations it’s now business time!

Congratulations to all those who have been working hard at training over the past weeks and have secured a starting position in one of the 4 mens grades. For those backing up, please be patient you will get an opportunity to show us all what you’re made of – when you get the chance make sure you grab it with both hands.

From early indications the range of ability between the grades seems smaller this year with strong players featuring throughout the teams which bodes well for the coming year. We just need to make sure that we’re all available for the AWAY games too!

The committee and coaches have put in an enormous amount of time and effort into getting us on the field this year with sponsors, physios, the new pavilion all providing their own challenges. We want to support and grow the club as much as possible but to do that we also need your support too. There are a number of things you can do to help out which require little effort:

  • Attend the Post Match Speeches at Waverley Bowling Club
  • Injured or have a niggle? Go see the club Physio – Advanz Therapies
  • Pay your subs in full as early as possible
  • Support and use as many of the club sponsors as possible
  • Make Yourself available for as many games as possible

Here’s to a successful 2012 Season – Good Luck to Everyone tomorrow! See you there!

Rob Willoughby

Club President
