Waverley Rugby Club’s Insurance is provided under the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) Sports Injury and Liability Insurance Scheme, through Gow-Gates Insurance Brokers.

It provides a basic level of insurance which covers the period from March the 1st and is valid for 12 months.

In order to obtain and be covered under this insurance, you must be registered with Waverley Rugby Club- this means completing an ARU Registration form at the beginning of each year/ before you start playing- even for returning players.

By no means are the benefits of this insurance comprehensive, Waverley RFSC highly recommends that you take out private health insurance or opt for ‘Top Up’ coverage (which is available through Gow-Gates Insurance Brokers- Contact Robert Lawson: 8267 9999 or 1800 811 371 ).

Making A Claim

In brief;

  • You must contact the Club Secretary (secretary@waverleyrugbyclub.com ) immediately, and complete the claim form. This is to be returned to the Club Secretary, who will then lodge it.
  • If claiming a loss of earnings, your employer should finalise the Loss of Earnings section, or if you are self employed you must provide proof of earnings such as a tax return.
  • You should continue to provide paid accounts and health fund rebates, which will be submitted.
  • Players must have an attending Physicians statement completed prior to sending in claimed accounts.
  • The claim must be received by the insurance company within 30 days of the injury.For detailed information log on to: http://www.rugby.com.au/community_rugby/policies_and_procedures/insurance,598.html

    Overseas Players

    The ARU states;

    “Although they [Overseas Players] will be eligible for claims under the Non Medicare Medical Expense of the ARU’s Sports Injury policy they may not be protected (depending on their individual circumstance) under Medicare thus there could be substantial medical expenses uninsured and/or non recoverable. The current ARU policy pays up to 80% of medical expenses which are not payable or partly payable by Medicare to a maximum of $3,000 after deduction of $250 excess”.

    That is one reason why Waverley RFSC highly recommends that all players have a private health fund/ insurance. “Our understanding is that Medicare eligibility is restricted to persons living permanently in Australia who are; Australian citizens; permanent Australian residents; New Zealand residents and citizens of countries with reciprocal health care agreements (currently UK, New Zealand, Malta, Italy, Sweden, Finland, Ireland and the Netherlands) – (You should make your own inquiries on this as there may be conditions that apply and Medicare arrangements do and can change from time to time). Overseas players not entitled to Medicare should effect appropriate travel insurance before travelling to Australia or take-out private health insurance whilst in Australia tailored for non-residents.”
