Boom ba Boom – Pre-Season Training Is Here

Monday, February 6th, 2012

PRE-SEASON STARTS NOW! Tonight 7.15pm – Waverley Oval 2.

People tend to use Eye of the Tiger as a bit of a fireup… but why? It’s got nothing on these kids…

Yehp that is pretty random. But if you’re like me, you’re probably sick and tired of summer TV, and keen to burn that summer fat. Hence the slightly bizarre link. Boom ba Boom…

Pre-Season Rugby Training – 7.15pm – Mondays and Wednesdays – Waverley #2

Waverley RFC Announcement of Coaches & Preseason Training

Monday, January 16th, 2012

Firstly, happy New Year to you all – we trust that you had a very enjoyable break and you’re now suitably relaxed and just itching to get stuck into what is shaping up to be a very momentous and successful 2012 rugby season for Waverley.

The season if fast approaching and for those of you that have either been stuck under a rock or failed to walk past Waverley oval recently – the new stadium and facilities are looking awesome and are very close to being completed. There is no doubt that in securing the use of the facilities we are the envy of all other subbies rugby clubs and the club is on track to have a great season both on and off the field in 2012! Thanks again to all those that helped with the tender process and in particular Stu Allen, Mark Ross, and Rob Willoughby.

The committee has been working hard over the last 2 months to put in place plans and arrangements for the coming season and the next 12 months; we are delighted to announce the new coaches for 2012 and also details for preseason training and warm up games.

Coaching & Team Managers 2012
1st Grade – Simon Kacimaiwai joins the club in an exciting new capacity and will not be a new face to some of you having worked with our colt’s team several years ago. We are delighted to be welcoming Simon back to the club and with his significant and extremely successful coaching background we are sure the club is in good hands to move forward.

2nd Grade – Tivoli Endemann is also welcomed back to club after a couple of years out. For those that may not know Tiv personally you probably know his face. It’s great to have Tiv back in the club as he is one of our most decorated players from back in the heyday (70’s & 80’s) and is also a longstanding coach of many grades over the last 20 odd years!

1st & 2nd Grade Team Manager – Bob Burgess is another face that will be familiar to most of you from several years ago when he coached and managed our successful colt’s teams. Bob is another longstanding clubman who knows how we tick and so we’re delighted to have him and his expertise with us for 2012 to help develop and improve the flow of players through the club.

3rd Grade – None other than Dennis Beaver, who else? At the risk of sounding like a broken record, it is great to have Beaver back on board again this year following the great work he did last time round. Beaver is another true blue Waverley player and coach over the last 10 or so years and is without doubt our most social member……I’m also reliably informed he is pretty good to have around for a boat race?!?!

4th Grade – Peter Burkley & David Kavanagh have agreed to pick up where they finished off in 2011 and will jointly coach our most successful team from last year. Having narrowly missed out on getting to the 4th grade final in what was their first year of coaching at Waverley, these guys are keen to right the wrong and go one, maybe even two, steps better this year.

3rd & 4th Grade Team Manager – Simon Payne will be taking on this new role for us this year as he has had to rather prematurely hang up boots! Simon has played for the club over the last several seasons and will be working with the Bob Burgess, the coaches, and players to develop our rugby talent. I am informed that Simon only accepted the role on the basis that he gets to wear a yellow bib all day Saturday.

So join me in welcoming the new faces to the club and well done to those returners – the committee feel strongly that these appointments will stand us in great stead for what we are anticipating to be a successful yet hard fought season with a great element of social fun and mateship.

Now on to the hard stuff; time to man up, get in shape and get set for the big hits! With recent developments to the various ovals we have been stretched with preseason ground allocations and so we have had to make a couple of changes to this year’s preseason training arrangements. The location, days & times are likely to change throughout the preseason and so we ask that you continue to asks questions and keep an eye on the website for news.

Trials & Taki Toa

Moving into March and things start to get a bit more serious on the rugby front. Preseason training will have been underway for over 5 weeks and the coaches will have a good idea of individual players fitness and ability and will start to consider gradings ahead of the preseason trials and the Taki Toa competition, both due to commence on Saturday 12th March.

The Taki Toa competition is a Maori tournament that Waverley has had a great success in over the years, having won the competition 14 times in its 28 year history. On the same day the rest of the club will be trialling away at Briars in the morning and possibly with bus trip down to Rockdale to cheer the guys on in the Taki Toa.

Details of our other trials will be published nearer the time but we currently have healthy competition against our 2010 Division 2 opponents Hornsby and Oatley.

Important Information on Oval Access & Preseason Training

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

Important Information on Oval Access

Over the past few years many of you will know that come the wet weather in July & August our training access for Oval No. 1 can be extremely restricted and thus detrimental to the success of our season. I think you’ll all agree that not being able to train for 5 weeks in the latter half of 2010 was fundamental in our slide down the Club Championship and ultimate relegation to Division 3.

However, following recent hard work by the committee and working with the Council to find solutions that not only allow Waverley Rugby Club uninterrupted Oval No. 1 access for game days but also 100% availability to Oval No. 2/3 for Tuesday and Thursday training we hope to have found a solution that will work for the entire 2011 season. Like all things, these negotiations with Waverley Council have required a bit of give and take and as such all Tuesday and Thursday training will not commence until 7.30pm.

What does this mean for the 2011 Waverley Rugby Club season;

• Preseason training commencing on Tuesday 1st February 2011 will take place on Oval No. 2/3 at 7.30pm and continuing every Tuesday and Thursday until the regular season begins. Regular season Tuesday and Thursday training following Round 1 (2nd April 2011) will continue on Oval No.2/3 through to the completion of the 2011 Season.

• With Oval No. 2/3 very, very rarely closed by Council due to wet weather this will allow us to guarantee training on Tuesdays and Thursday for the whole of 2011. A definite win!

• Saturday home games will be unaffected, Waverley Rugby Club will be maintaining 100% access to Oval No. 1 for all scheduled games but still subject to wet weather. Oval No. 2/3 will be used as a back and we hope to continue our recent record of not having to play any of our scheduled home games over the wet weather weekend.

• 2011 will also be an important year for the clubs future. With the new pavilion and club rooms due for completion in September 2011 Waverley Council will soon be commencing an Expression of Interest process to allocate use of the clubrooms and new facilities. With 2011 being our 40th Anniversary we will be looking to work with the Council to secure our next 40 years in the new facilities at Waverley Park. We hope the recent negotiations will go a long way to helping us to achieve this.

Preseason Training commencing 1st February 2011

With the later than usual start to training (and the new booking not starting until 7.30pm prompt) we ask that all players arrive at the oval at 7.15pm in order to commence preparations and start training as soon as possible. With the late start we will be endeavouring to make training sessions as short, sharp and succinct as possible. Arriving at 7.15pm, ready to go at 7.30pm will give the coaches the best opportunity of achieving this.

Preseason training will maintain the previously posted format, click here to check it out, http://www.waverleyrugby.com.au/announcements/2011/01/13/829/pre-season-training-1st-feb-2011/. Please also remember to be prepared and bring both runners, footy boots and plenty of water.

Seeya you all at 7.15pm, Waverley Oval No. 2/3, Tuesday 1st February 2011. Should you have any queries please direct them to any member of the current committee, http://www.waverleyrugby.com.au/about/club-contacts/.

Pre-season Training 1st Feb 2011

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

Preseason Training to commence 1st February 2011.

At last the rugby season is on the verge of being back! As we head towards the 2011 season Waverley Rugby will be commencing preseason training on Tuesday 1st February 2011.

This year the club have enlisted 1st grade coach, Deon Smith to lead the initial 3-4 week block of training. This first block of training will focus on rugby specific fitness, strength and conditioning and be ably assisted by our other grade coaches, James Hassett, Denis Beaver, David Kavanagh and Kevin Frost.

Moving on and approaching the first trial games and Taki Toa (both pencilled in for mid March) preseason training will take on a more rugby skills and team drill onus whilst continuing to work on individual fitness levels.

In the final few weeks of preseason training and once the coaches have had an opportunity to watch all players train and play, preseason training will lean more towards team training sessions, set piece training and practice runs ahead of the open round of the season on 2nd April 2011.

Training will again take place at Waverley Oval No. 2/3 and around the park. Please be there at 7.15pm for a 7.30pm prompt start.

Please ensure you come prepared with both runners and your footy boots, and plenty of water. A little bit of cash for a beer at the Bowlo after will always be handy too….

Got any questions? Please feel free to contact any of the 2011 committee members who will be glad to assist. Click here for club contacts
In the meantime the regular Social Touch footy will be continuing for the next 2 weeks. Stay tuned to the Website Shout Box and Facebook page for more information.

How Often Should Waverley Train…?

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

The poll on the website for the last two weeks has been about how often Waverley should train, especially as attendance on Tuesday nights has been woeful.

The poll asked how often you thought Waverley should train.

The (see below to vote) was:

Should Waverley train…

a) One night per week.
b) Two nights per week, but Tuesday is optional.
c) Two nights per week, but both nights compulsory.

The results are interesting and a bit unexpected, especially given the attendance at training on Tuesday nights.

Given that attendance is not matching the votes in the poll, clearly we need some discussion on the reasons why numbers are so low on Tuesday, when 90% of those voting are suggesting we should be training two nights per week.

A club survey will be out soon, so have a think about what feedback you want to give, and how we can improve. You’ll also be able to put your thoughts to paper then.

Please provide comment below. What do you think the problems are with training? Why aren’t people making it down? What would you do to improve things? etc etc.

You can be anonymous if you wish (but will be better if you’re not).

Alternatively you can head to the forum and start up your own separate conversation.

If you haven’t yet voted, you can vote in the poll below.

Gringo Training on Tonight – Head to the Palace

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Waverley Oval is closed for training tonight. As such we’re repeating the Club Dinner we had in the last batch of wet weather, so please head to the Palace for Beers and some Mexican.

Club Dinner – Mexican Night

With Waverley Oval closed again (bloody Sydney weather), we’re moving training to The Palace. This is compulsory, as we all need to re-group given the lack of training in recent weeks.

Mexican Night

Thursday night is The Palace’s famous Mexican night. For 15 dollars pesos!!! you’ll get your choice of fajita’s, burritos, or even quesadilla’s, plus a Corona thrown in for good measure.

Head to the Palace from 6.30pm

Contact Your Coach

Please contact your coach (or post a comment below) if you can’t make tonight, and to let them know your availability for the weekend.

Saturday is an another important game for us if Waverley is to remain in Div 2 in 2011.

Wet Weather Advice

There is a slight chance of Waverley Oval #1 being open on Saturday so pray for the coastal showers to stop (it’s clear everywhere else!).

If #1 is closed, we’ll bump Grades 1 to 4 and Colts to the #2 Oval.

The Flying Fifths will scheduled to play Colleagues at 12.00pm on Oval #2. In the event of wet weather, the game will be moved down to Colleagues home ground.

The Women are playing away to Sydney Uni.

Full Details Tomorrow

Check back here tomorrow for full details on the weekends games.
