Last Home Game of the Season Saturday

One of the biggest days of the season is always the last home game of the season, and this weekend will be no different. If you haven’t been down in awhile make sure you get down.

Ladies Day – This Weekend

Saturday is Ladies Day, and we’re pleased to announce a change in format.

Gone is the $30 cover charge, but staying is the free flow sparkling.

That’s right, there is no cost for the Ladies, but you’ll still get a mighty fine day out, in what looks like perfect sunny weather conditions (19 degrees is the forecast).

For those who have fronted up the moolah, you’ll be getting your funds automatically reimbursed. Watch out for your bank accounts. If you have any problems, contact The Secretary.

Want $25 just to put a hit on a tackle bag?

If you want to earn a $25 Coles (Myer?) Gift Voucher, the University of NSW will be doing rugby tackle study. For those participants that choose to participate you will tackle an instrumented tackle bag 6 times (3 with head gear, 3 without – head gear will be provided), as well as complete a short questionnaire and consent approval.

To participate, just head to the area at the North end of the field near the temporary sheds.

Massive Night at the Palace

Not only will it be a huge day, but it will be a MASSIVE night at the Palace as well, so make sure you head down to the Palace for the Post match speeches.

Make sure you kick on.

Game Day Details

Unfortunately the women are not playing at home, and are off to play Drummoyne, for what is likely to cement their place in the finals. A win will do it for them, and with a run of good form recently, may well see Waverley cause some upset wins in the following weeks.

All men’s teams are at home, before a trip away to Hornsby the following weekend.

For the men, this is a critical, must win weekend courtesy of last weeks results that saw Waverley drop to last place in the Divisional Table.

Waverley sits on 1118 points, with Hornsby just in front on 1197 points. 77 points is all the separates the two sides, and with Waverley due to play Hornsby the weekend after next, we need as many wins as possible this weekend, to give ourselves the best shot next week, as who ever wins 1st Grade next week, will likely see themselves remain in Div 2 in 2011.

Match Reviews

NSW Farmers Women

In their recent wet weather make up game Waverley beat this weekends opponents Drummoyne 27 to 19 in an impressive display.

This weekend the girls are jumping across the other side of the city, and will be playing under lights.

On equal points to Penrith, but a marginally better points differential, Waverley is unlikely to lose a place in the finals given Penrith take on Sydney Uni, but the best way to secure finals action is just to put a win up on the board, and then worry after that.

The Palace 1st Grade

Mirroring the Divisional Table, the weekends results saw Waverley drop to last in the Barraclough Cup, with Waverley losing to Newport and Hornsby beating St Ives.

Oatley sit just outside of the top four and were it not for some disciplinary issues that are saw points stripped off them, would be fighting for a lot more this weekend. As such all the pressure is on Oatley, to pick themselves up from the demoralising loss of points, or let Waverley get an unlikely win.

Last time around, Waverley lost to Oately, but showed it had enough potential to get a win could it just maintain it’s patience.

This is where we really need a result. 1st Grade contribute the most points to the Divisional Table. Show some pride boys.

The Palace 2nd Grade

Waverley goes into the match favourites based on ladder position, but on recent form it will be a close match between the two sides. Like 1st Grade, we really need a win in 2nd Grade to give us every fighting chance of scraping through to remain in Div 2.

3rd Grade

Sitting in last place in the Blunt Cup, Waverley is fighting for pride heading into the last two rounds, against some quality opposition.

This weekend’s opponents are Oately, sitting in 4th, with 2nd placed Hornsby the following week.

It will be a tough couple of rounds. But points are points, and we need to get them where ever we can.

Cardsmart Consulting Colts

The message to the boys is to stick with it for just two more games… This weekend you have the opportunity to avenge the found 8 forfeit to Oately. With Oatley in 9th and Waverley in 8th (would be 7th were it not for the forfeit), Waverley is favourites.

A win here would be a great moral booster ahead of the game to Hornsby next weekend.

Alexander Associates 4th Grade

Remaining unbeaten, Waverley goes into the round favourites despite being a little shaky on numbers.

Here is hoping that the home game brings the boys out.

JCB Communications and Aquilla Plumbing Flying Fifths

Waverley’s Halligan Cup team takes on the top of the table Colleagues Convicts this weekend.

Always enjoyable encounters, Waves is looking to take some points off the competition leaders.

Currently in 5th, Waves is just 4 points behind 4th Placed Petersham.

Like always it will be a great round.

Previews and Details

NSW Farmers Women

While the men go hunting all over Sydney, the women play host to Merrylands at Waverley Oval at 11.00am.

On the back of last weekends win, and some mighty fine performances the weeks prior, this one has screams a great opportunity for Waves to take an upset win.

The girls will be up against it, but Waverley’s performance is heading in the right direction.

Men’s Games Vs Newport

The trek up to Newport is another important one for Waverley. Not only to keep us clear of Hornsby, but to keep The Palace 2nd Grade in the finals hunt, to salvage some pride across the underperforming teams.

A loss in 2nd Grade will seal Waverley’s fate and see us miss out on a finals berth, where as a win will still keep us on track, depending on the results over the weekend.

In 1st Grade, Newport will be seeking redemption after the Round 7 loss to Waverley. In what was Waverley’s first win of the season and only one of two, Waves will be looking to secure another 4 points off our fellow sea-side club.

One of third grades two wins of the season was also against Newport, with the Breakers team just marginally a head of Waverley in the Blunt Cup. It would be a great one-two combination if 1st and 3rd Grade could both get back on the right side of the scoresheet.

For the third week in a row, Waverley’s most successful team of the season, the Alexander Associates 4th Grade, will be playing a top of the table clash. A massive 17 points separate the two sides, but with Waverley being light on in numbers on recent trips away, Waves may be a risk of faltering just ahead of the finals, however unlikely this is. It’s still hard to see Waverley losing this one.

Down and out on their luck, the Cardsmart Consulting Colts, have a tough ask. After a disappointing start, that saw numbers drop off, the guys have struggled through recent weeks. Combining this with a trip to Newport, and an early start, we really need the guys to pull together, for the last three rounds.

Flying Fifths Vs Blacktown

Waverley’s Halligan Cup team has put on some entertaining displays in recent weeks, and this week looks no different, with just three points separating the two clubs.

Who knows which way it will fall, but the bus trip out the Blacktown will certainly make for a great day out.

All Teams at Home. Great Weather Forecast

It’s been quite some time, but all seven teams are at home tomorrow under perfect blue skies, for a series of great clashes against Hunters Hill (all men’s teams) and Warringah (women).

It is another formidable round for Waverley, with Hunters Hill and Warringah currently both 2nd in their respective competitions, and both on sizzling form in recent rounds. See below for more details. Read More→

All teams on the Road

Some go North. Others go West. All teams are away this weekend, and we need everyone available if previous weeks are anything to go by.

The round sees Waverley’s Div Two teams away to St Ives at St Ives, the Flying Fifths away to Macquarie Uni and the Women away to Merrylands.

With just six games remaining in the 2010 season, the next four weeks will make or break Waverley’s other finals hope, The Palace 2nd Grade. With Deon Smith’s men, playing four of the five teams above them, they need wins (plus some bonus points will help too). Waverley currently sit in 6th on 27 points (and 12 games), with Hunters Hill (45), St Ives (40), BOBs (36), Kings (33) and Newport (29) all above them. Of those only BOBs is on twelve games. The good news is that Hunters Hill needs to play a catch up game against Newport and St Ives a game against Kings, so if the matches go according to the competition table, Waverley is right in the thick of things.

Divisional Championship Status

2nd Grades form are also imperative to Waverley staying in Division Two in 2011. Yes, wins in 1st Grade have the greatest influence on our position in the Divisional Championship, but after that it is 2nd Grade that is most important. As highlighted below, it is Waverley’s performance in 2nd Grade that is keeping us in the mix.

As Highlighted previously, Divisional Championship Points are awarded on the following multiples of Grade Championship Points. Waverley currently sits 9th on 911 points, compared with Hornsby’s 812 points.

Grade Position Grade Points Multiple Championship Points
1st Grade 9th 11 x22 242
2nd Grade 6th 27 x12 342
3rd Grade 10th 10 x6 60
Colts 7th 19 x6 114
4th Grade 1st 57 x3 171
Total 911

The above table highlights the important role the higher grades have played in recent weeks with the wins and bonus points keeping us out of the danger zone. In order to stay up, this will need to continue in coming weeks.

The above also highlights the important role that 4th Grade plays. While not contributing a great deal of Championship points (despite remaining unbeaten, and having secured 9 bonus points), 4th Grades contribution is helping us tread water over Hornsby.

The moral of the story? We need every grade doing their best week in week out, even if it is only to secure a bonus point or two, as these are what will see us stay up in Division Two in 2011.

Match Previews

We’ve covered The Palace 2nd Grade, so here is a selection of the others.

The Palace 1st Grade

This is a VERY important clash for Waverley. A straight win here will see Waverley on level points with St Ives and a bonus point win will see us move up the table a notch into 8th.

Last time the two teams met, St Ives walked away with a narrow 23 to 20 point win over Waverley. Since then St Ives have only managed one win (over Hornsby), with Waverley recording wins over Hornsby and Newport, and recording a narrow defeat to UNSW.

It’s an even money bet who will walk away with the spoils.

NSW Famers Women

It is another tough ask for the women this weekend, talking on Merrylands (or the Old Parramatta), one of the strongest clubs in the competition. Merrylands are currently in 3rd place on the table, with Waverley in 6th, but Waverley is confident it can pick up an upset win, after Merrylands form has slumped in recent weeks.

Cardsmart Consulting Colts

After recording a solid win over UNSW last weekend, Waverley’s Young Guns have a tough ask against 3rd place Colts this weekend.

With their finals hopes, pretty much dashed, Waverley is now playing for pride and playing to build for the 2011 season.

St Ives took the spoils last time around.

3rd Grade

While it has been a forgettable season for Waverley’s 3rd Grade, there is plenty of chance for the lads to redeem themselves and potentially move out of last place.

First step is against 8th placed St Ives this weekend. Just five points ahead of Waverley, a win here, plus a win against Newport in coming weeks, would see Waverley with a fantastic chance of moving up the ladder and into 8th spot.

It will be a tough ask though, after being on the end of some 30 to something results over preceeding weeks.

JCB Communications Vs Aquilla Plumbing Flying Fifths

This weekends round looks like a cracker for Waverley’s Halligan Cup Boys, with 5th placed Waverley (23 points), taking on 7th placed Mac Uni (22 points).

It is the first time the two clubs have met this season, but after some great tussles last year (where Waverley tended to walk away victors), more is expected again this weekend.

Alexander Associates 4th Grade

Round 13 is a top versus bottom of the table clash. Waverley should win, but ‘the boyz’ are smart enough not to take anything for granted.

Waverley Stays Local

With Sydney having experienced some of its coldest June temperatures in 40 years, it is thankful that this weekends games will all be ‘local’ with the men playing the second round of the Eastern Suburbs Derby against UNSW at Daceyville and the Women hosting Penrith at Waverley Oval for the second time in three weeks.

It’s an interesting round for the Club, and represents a pretty good opportunity for Waverley to get a number of wins across the board, as both UNSW and Penrith like Waverley and struggling for form.

While both lots of oppo are generally higher up the table, Waverley goes in underdogs, but with a great chance none the less.

Match Reviews & Directions

NSW Farmers Women – Vs Penrith

The Women again return to the main oval at home for the second time this year, but will be looking to turn around its futures after suffering a 34 to 15 point loss to Penrith two weeks ago.

That result means that Waverley and Penrith have recorded both a win and loss against each other. With Waverley having lost one of its star players, Helen Blevins, last weekend, it will be a tough round for Waverley.

Kick off is at 11am, on Waverley Oval.

Go Girls!

All Men Vs UNSW

That’s right all men’s teams (Grades 1 to 4, Colts and Flying Fifths) are up against UNSW this weekend.

Waverley is away to UNSW, with a short hop down to Daceyville. Kick off times are as follows:

Colts – 10.30am
4th Grade – 12.00pm
3rd Grade – 12.55pm
Flying Fifths – 1.00pm (DP#2)
2nd Grade – 2.00pm
1st Grade – 3.15pm

The Palace 1st Grade

Recent weeks have seen UNSW with some indifferent form, yo-yoing through wins (over St Ives and Newport) and losses (Briars and Hunters Hill), with the last result being a win. If UNSW are to stay true to form, Waverley goes into the round with a great chance of securing it’s third win of the season.

Everyone knows that it isn’t going to be as easy as that, and Waverley has a lot of work to do if it is going to secure an upset win. Still, opportunities abound, and if Waverley can bounce back from a disappointing loss, it has everything to gain.

The Palace 2nd Grade

Like 1st Grade, Waverley Stockdale Cup hopefuls are looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss to Briars last week.

Waves currently sit in 5th, 7 points (and one game) outside of the top four. With UNSW just four points behind Waverley, this is a most win game for the Blue and Gold, preferably with a bonus point, with Waverley needing the moment as it heads into upcoming matches against three of the top four teams (St Ives, Kings and Hunters Hill) in coming weeks.

3rd Grade

If you go on competition table, Waverley has no chance of winning this weekend, in what is a top (UNSW) versus bottom (Waves) clash in the Blunt Cup.

Luckily life isn’t that simple, and with UNSW having recorded two losses on the trot to 9th place St Ives last week, and 7th place Hunters Hill the week prior to that.

Can Waverley make it three losses in a row?

Here is hoping so, as we really do need ever point we can get in Divisional Championship in order to keep us in Div Two in 2010.

Alexander Associates 4th Grade

It’s a 1st vs 3rd Clash this weekend in the Richardson Cup. Waverley is confident they will remain undefeated this weekend, and UNSW are confident that they can change that.

Cardsmart Consulting Colts

An interesting battle will ensue in the Robertson Cup, with both teams on 14 points, with Waves 8th, and UNSW 9th on the competition Table. In reality Waverley has won one game more, but lost those points courtesy of the forfeit to Oatley.

Last time, Waverley gut the rub of the result, with a big win over UNSW, and is looking to repeat again this time.

Aquilla Plumbing and JCB Communications Flying Fiths

Heading into the match, both Waverley and UNSW are a bit light on numbers, so it will be interesting to see which way things fall this time.

Both clubs have already played each other twice, with Waverley walking away victors both times.

As per usual, it should be a good match up between the two clubs.

Round Preview Vs Briars, Warringah & Colleagues

This weekend Waverley goes three ways, with the Div Two teams playing at home, the Women away to Warringah and the Flying Fifths just down the road at Colleagues.

Overall it is a tough round for Waverley, with the women and the Flying Fifths taking on the competition leaders, and Briars being right up there in a number of grades.

Fortitudine Vincimus – By Endurance we Conquer

Quoting the Ernest Shackleton family motto is not how we normally start match previews, but it is a great metaphor for this weekends daunting task. I know I know… many of you are thinking, “WTF? We’re a rugby club, why are we talking about metaphors and Ernest Shackleton?”.

This weekend, Waverley heads into a very tough encounter, against run-away competition leaders, Barkers Old Boys (BOBs). Put simply, we wanted to be where they are, but unfortunately we’re languishing down the bottom end of the table, and instead of fighting for promotion to Div 1, we’re fighting to stay in Div 2.

But all is not lost by endurance, we can conquer, and it all starts here. With a return to form by most grades the last few weeks, there is a good chance of a few upset wins this weekend. Make no mistake, it will be a very tough encounter, BOBs are a formidable opponent, and more so at home, where they generally sit first on the “home game ladder” in most grades. That said, some cracks have started to appear. Read more below! Read More→

Brrr it’s cold – Perfect for Ruggers this Weekend!

If you are like most people in this club, chances are you’ve come from a climate which is much colder than Sydney. In your first year here, it was probably the mildest winter you’ve ever had and you probably swam in the ocean every month (note the ocean temp is still a balmy 20.4 degrees). Then comes your second winter, and you freeze your bum off. If this is you, right now your pulling out your puffer jacket and complaining how cold it is. At least it’s no longer raining.

The good thing about this weather, is that it is perfect for rugby, with Waverley playing the washed out Round 7 match against Newport this Saturday. That is right, Waves is playing rugby this long weekend.

No one likes playing rugby on a long weekend, when there are other things to be done, but we need everyone on deck. One in. All in. So get your bum down to training tonight, and keep Saturday free. (Note, there are no Womens or Flying Fifths games this weekend).

Previews

The Palace 1st Grade

Fresh from their first win of the season and recent good form, Waverley has a great chance to knock off their more fancied opponents.

Having started the season on a high and leading the competition, Newport have suffered a form slump in recent weeks suffering three losses on the trot.

It being a long weekend, combined with Newport requiring a big trip, presents Waverley with a fantastic opportunity to record its second win and move us further out of the danger zone of Divisional Relegation.

The Palace 2nd Grade

In recent seasons, Waverley and Newport have been the form teams in the Stockdale Cup competition. This season both teams find themselves further away from the top of the comp than they would normally be, the round is set to be a tough encounter as both try to move onwards and upwards.

Just four points and one match is all that separates Waverley (3rd) and Newport (6th), so it is a pretty tough call who goes into the round favourite. However, for the victor it is either a chance to either take 1st place (in Waverley’s case, depending on other results), or for Newport to move into the top four (again depending on other results). A lot is at stake.

While Waves probably goes into the match as narrow favourites courtesy of the home game, the result is too hard to call. Certainly it is the match of the Round.

3rd Grade

After recording a narrow loss on the weekend, Waverley’s third grade will be turning their attention to securing their 2nd win of the season, an eminently possible feat given Newport has only secured one more win their Waverley (but are two games down).

A win will certainly give Waverley a chance to move out of last place, given perennial competition for the wooden spoon, St Ives are taking on 3rd place Kings.

Alexander Associates 4th Grade

The Round 7 replay in the Richardson Cup is the top of the table clash, with Waverley on 38 points and Newport on 25 points, but two games down. It will probably be Waverley’s toughest match, with Newport showing they can consistently put on big scores, taking four, four try bonus points in the season so far.

No doubt Waverley goes in favourites after winning 28 games on the trot. Will this be their first loss?

Cardsmart Consulting Colts

Courtesy of some new blood joining the club in recent weeks, Waverley’s form is on the improve in the Under 21 (U21) Robertson Cup.

Newport will be some tough oppo though. Sitting 3rd on the table, they have beaten the top two teams of the competition. However, they also lost to 8th place UNSW (who Waverley would have been ahead of if we hadn’t lost 4 competition points as result of the Oatley forfeit) last weekend. Waverley can’t take too much hope from that result, as it was bloody wet, and it may have been the wake up call Newport needed to return them to top form.

Ladies Day

Put it in your diary now. Ladies Day is set for 24 July 2010 (home game against Kings). More details to come.
