Saturday saw Waverley head out of the eastern suburbs for the first run out of the season at the annual Newport 10’s tournament.
First up after an extensive 2 minute warm up including a brief “what’s your name mate†session, Waverley faced Newport’s first team on their home turf. Despite going down 4-0, Waverley stuck at it and steadily improved as the game progressed.
An 1 ½ hour wait for the next game gave Waverley plenty of time to regroup, finally warm up properly and start discussing tactics.
Next up came Silver Bullets. Again, the result didn’t go our way eventually losing 4-1 but Waverley was much improved and after an inspired tactical substitution and a fortuitous penalty move from Andre, Billy crossed the line for a well deserved try.
In the final game the team faced Cabcon after another 1 ½ hour wait which did Waverley no favours. Despite everyone being tired and confidence being knocked after conceding an early try, Waverley continued to stick at it, building on the previous two games and with some great team work and effort we ended the first half down by two tries to one. We’d finally been rewarded with a well deserved try following some determined team play when Chris crossed the line late in the first half. In the second half with confidence on the up and the team playing undoubtedly their best rugby of the day, Waverley equalised when Sam crossed the line – was a surprise win on the cards?
Unfortunately not… Waverley was unable to hold on to the lead after the ball which appeared to have crossed the dead ball line bizarrely rolled back in to play. We eventually lost 3-2 but it was a great effort all around.
A big well done to all of the boys and a good day was had by all!
