Almost 2010

2010 is almost upon us. No doubt many of you have had a bit of a feast over Christmas, maybe putting on a few pounds.

The good news is that pre-season is just around the corner, and will give you plenty of chance to work off those extra kilos.

Training starts with a light session on Saturday January 30th, and will be followed with a BBQ back at the Bowlo. Really the perfect chance to catch up with everyone.

Regular Tuesday and Training sessions start the following week and will hopefully continue through to September with Waves once again taking premiership glory!

See you in 2010!

Merry Christmas

Wishing you a Merry Christmas on behalf of Waverley Rugby Club.

2009 was a big year for Waverley, so we hope you all get the chance to have some well needed rest, and catch up with friends and family.

2010 is shaping up to be a corker of a season with new coaches, new sponsors, new website, Waverley hosting the Taki Toa, breaking ground works on the new pavilion, Waverley Netball team, and heaps of great social events…

So drink up and be Merry before a hard (but great) pre-season. With changes mooted for the 2011 season (potential to reduce the number of teams per division down to 8), we’ll need a fantastic effort to keep us in Div 2 (ie if they change the structure to 8 teams per division, the bottom four teams will be relegated to Div 3).

Maybe you should go for a run or two between now and January 30th.

Merry Christmas, and see you in the New Year.

Waverley Rugby Club

Pre-Season Training – Starts January 30th

Confirming that pre-season training will start on Saturday January 30th.

Following on from recent years, the Saturday session will be your chance to get your legs moving, all followed up with a BBQ and beers back at the Bowlo.

We’ll then drop straight into Tuesday and Thursday night training from February 2nd.

Open Night will be held on Wednesday February 10th.

Stay tuned for more details.

Waverley Bowling Club

Notice to all Waverley Rugby members who are financial members of Waverley Bowling Club.

As you may be aware, the Bowlo’s AGM is to be held tomorrow (9.00am Waverley Bowling Club), and there is a motion to amalgamate with Easts Leagues Club.

After careful consideration, the 2010 Committee recommends that Waverley Members support the motion as it stands.

Could all financial members please try and make the AGM to ensure the motion is carried.

As some of you may have the Bowlo has been in financial difficult the last few years, and unless it amalgamates with another club, it is likely to go into administration.

The offer as presented by Easts is a great one for both the Bowlo and for Waverley Rugby Club. Easts have agreed to continue to operate the facility as a Bowling Club for the next 20 years, upgrade the facilities of the club, take over the Bowlo’s debt, and most importantly for Waverley Rugby, continue sponsoring the Rugby Club.

The Committee is of the opinion, that even if the Bowlo was not in it’s current financial state, this is a better arrangement than it we would otherwise get.

So please, head down to the Bowlo at 9.00am tomorrow and vote for the proposal to proceed.

2010 Committee & Annual Report

Congratulations to the following people, on being elected to the Committee for 2010.

- President – Tivoli Endemann
- Senior Vice President – Gerd Gerhands
- Senior Vice President – David Kavanagh
- Club Captain – Andy Collingridge
- Secretary – Mark Ross
- Treasurer – James Barton
- Social Secretary – Nick Eder
- Management Committee – Bob Burgess
- Management Committee – Karin Christie
- Management Committee – Sharron Dick

With a great mix of new blood, and returning members, 2010 is set to be a great year.

Most importantly, it was the biggest turn out we’ve had at an AGM in recent years (with three Life Members in attendance, Ray Eardley, Tivoli Endemann and Barry Kennedy).

It was also great to see so many nominations for all Committee roles, with votes needed to decide most positions. We’re certain that those that were unsuccessful will be assisting in some capacity too.

This is all on top of a number of people (Greg Dalton, Johann Kruse and David Whetton) who have already agreed to help out in some dedicated areas.

Of course, we’re still looking for extra bods to help out in one shape or another.

With Coach Selections already well progressed (we’ll be making the first announcements shortly), you can be confident in what 2010 will bring.

Former Waverley Player Debut's for England

Having played for Waverley in 2009, Ayoola Erinle made his international debut for England in their loss to the Wallabies at Twickenham on Saturday.

Amazingly, he moved from Waverley’s 3rd Grade to England’s reserve bench (maybe it isn’t that amazing after all).

Ok, I’m stretching it a bit, it was only one game while on holiday in Australia between contracts, but still…

Go the mighty Wallabies…

Waverley Pavilion DA Approved

Last night Waverley Council approved the Development Application for the new Pavilion.

The approval is great news to the club, and allows Council to commence works on the demolition of the existing Pavilion, and commence rebuilding after that.

The project will design and construct a new pavilion and multipurpose facility for the local community and it will include:

* seating for up to 250 spectators;
* multi-purpose indoor sports court;
* club rooms for the Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club;
* shared club space for local rugby league and union teams;
* community function room with kitchen areas;
* change rooms and accessible public amenities;
* referees room;
* sports equipment storage area; and
* energy efficient and water saving measures throughout the building.

View of New Pavilion – Things have changed a little since this, but gives you an idea.

At the end of the project, Waverley will end up with one of the best grounds in Subbies Rugby with facilities second to none.

When is the pavilion likely to be ready? Who knows at this point, but the Federal stimulus money (nice $2million of the ~$8million construction cost) should mean that works happen fairly quickly. More than likely ready at the end of 2010, ready for our 40th year in 2011.
